Lift Kit?? Or what?

I was wondering if i should get a lift kit for my 91 4wd 4dr Eddie Baurer, and if so what brand and at what price is the best and cheapest. Or i would like to now how much it would cost to stick the tires out a little, and the cost and if i can do it myself. Thank you.

Depending on what kind of rims you have on the Explorer, you may be able to fit 31" tires without any problems. My friend has 31" on his stock '91 XLT rims and they don't rub very much (only at full turn and full compression). I have 31" on my '91 EB but I also have the Rancho 2.5" lift. Will be getting 32" when this set wears out.

Thanks kvo. I have heard rumors about what happens when you stick the tires out on your truck. Someone told me they break off. Is that true? And how much would it cost to get a kit to do that?

Do you mean the tires would break off if they stick out too far or the thread? The tires could be damaged if they are rubbed onto the chassis, steering components, etc. if this is what you mean by break off.

The Rancho lift kit costs me about $700, installation $800, gears (4.10) another $800 (parts & labor). Tires and wheels are extra and vary on types and styles. All costs are in 1995/1996.

It depends on what you want to do with the Explorer and how aggressive you want to be with it. Lift kits are available in 2.5" (Rancho, James Duff), 4" (Trailmaster, Superlift), 5.5" (Superlift), and probably more but I don't know them.

I could not install any of the kits by myself because I do not have all the specialized tools like the shops nor would I want to w/o the experiences of the shops' installers.

Once you start with the mods, there is no end in sight. I have invested over $5,000 in aftermarket parts on my '91 and it's only a lightly modified Explorer. Others with lockers, custom bumpers, tire carrier, suspension mods, etc. have spent probably twice/three times if not more. But it has been worth it for me!

BTW - A few of us Explorers are heading down to Hollister on June 26, 1999 to do a little 4wheeling. If you're interested, check out under the "Offroad Explorations" forum, there will be different Explorers with different kits so you can see from the mild (mine 2.5") to the wild (Ji/Tami's 5.5" and Mac's 5.5") set up. There will be a few other stock Explorers also.

Thanks once again kvo. I am not really into offroading but i want my explorer to look good. I am going to be buying rims, and tires, and i was thinking about sticking the tires out a little or getting a lift kit. I found a sky jacker lift kit for $139. Its 2 inches the guy said. And i could install it myself. Now i am new to this, does this sound like a good deal, or what? Once again i just want it to look good.

It sounds like a body lift kit. If it is a body lift, you could probably do it at home with a buddy (for safety). It would take about a half day. It has 2" blocks for the body, steering shaft extension, botls, washers, etc.
