It is when the drive shaft is out of balance (caked up with dirt or if it is bent). It is the same concept as an out of balanced tire. Simple check, look under the vehicle, check the drive shaft to see if it is clean, if not, wipe clean or spray with water. To check to see if the drive shaft is straight, use a straight edge or a level, place it along the drive shaft, there should not be any gap between the level and the driveshaft, check all around.

You really can't avoid it and about the only thing you can do to protect it is be careful where you go and know where it is so you don't hit any obstacles with it.

My $0.02.

I had a similar problem on my '92. Turns out, it was just bad U-joints. The front was a rusted and not pivoting (hence, the vibration). Try that first.

Cheers!

I was getting the 'vibes' too. Just changed out the rear driveshaft u-joints with greaseable one's (like Ford SHOULD have put in), and will be doing the 3 on the front shaft next week. Hopefully this will eliminate the vibes I get between 60-70 mph.

I'll also be looking at new shocks since I'm close to 50K miles, and will keep reading the posts on those.
