Applying New Clearcoat On Factory Wheels

Has anyone ever removed old clearcoat on their factory 91-94 Explorer aluminum wheels, reconditioned them, and put new clearcoat back on? Would appreciate your thoughts/input. Thanks. Mike

I've never had this done, but i know there are places you can send tem out to that will clearcoat them, chrome them, paint them, etc. I also am not sure of the price.

Hey I bought some clearcoat in a can and tried to do that to my wheels...3 of them came out okay but then the fourth wheel had a yellow tint to it...i went crazy with some turpentine and screwed up the finish royally. (i was just trying to strip the clear coat off so i could try to coat it again) Anyway, I ended up getting them redone professionally. It costed 300 bucks for that. I think it was worth it, because i really really like the stock wheels. So...clearcoat them yourself...but do it very carefully, and dont use cheap clearcoat, and clean them up really good before you start...etc etc

I have been thinking about trying this, what did you use to take off the old clearcoat. Just wet sand it? I did it on my girlfriends jeep and they came out good, but they were trashed when I started.

I didnt really get all the old clearcoat off...I just kind of ruffed them up with some 240 grit. I was scared of sanding thru the clearcoat and scratching the machined finish all up. If I had to do it all over again, i'd just go straight to the rim shop. It costed a buttload, but like i said, they look brand new.
