firestone replacements - only goodyear rts, any ideas?

Well I suppose it wasn't such a good idea to wait to replace my firestones after all. All the dealerships in the area are only getting Goodyear RT/S tires in and aren't getting any michelins at all. Apparently everybody is asking for the michelins so that's making it twice as hard.

Anybody have any ideas? You suppose there's any chance at all some place like a 3rd party would give me any credit and let me pay a small "upgrade" fee for brand new tires if I bring them in right away?

Anybody done anything creative?

those are the ones i put on my wifes mutantnier(seem fine), also cause miche's were next to impossible to get here as well, however i know that now you can go to belle tire & discount tire and they do the paperwork for you(ie: nothing out of pocket from you) also double check fords website as i think there are directions for submitting a claim for reimbursment upto a fixed dollar amount(meaning you can deviate from ford recommened replacements).

A buddy of mine just bought a used X, he took his to Sam's Club and bought the Michelin's, then Ford refunded him the money. He too had to pay an upgrade charge, they gave him like $125 a tire and the Mich. were like $135. So for $40 he got the tires he wanted.
It doesn't seem that long ago, but I can't remember.

Good Luck.

Just out of curiosity, why did you wait?

well yeah first of all, I was waiting because the first time I looked, nobody had the cross terrains in stock... plus the dealer (salesguy - shoulda known better than to listen to him) told me I could replace them until 2004 or something.

and yeah I actually called around this morning to see if anybody would offer me a trade in on the ford replacement tires and a guy at great american tire told me he could still do the replacement for whatever tires I wanted with no money out of pocket. needless to say, I jumped on that because I thought that part of the program ended in November/December.

and yeah, I waited because I wanted michelins and mainly because it's cold in Colorado and I wasn't too worried about a high speed blowout. Free replacement tires at 15k turned out to be a good deal for me - though I wouldn't necessarily have recommended anyone else to wait.

anyway, the end result is I'm getting my cross terrains put on as we speak. thanks for the quick response anyway guys.

on a side note, anybody know if 31" bfg a/t tires will fit on the explorer with no mods? my brother in law is offering me his "old" jeep tires as he just bought a big lift and 33" mut terrains. tried to search but you can't search for "31" as it's too short a string I guess. the tires are in good shape and would be nice to have for offroading if nothing else...

don't worry, I had 1 Goodyear Wrangler AT/S on reserve for over 6 months until I ended up getting the RT/S. Fortunately, this is only for the spare tire. Hopefully, I'll get someone to buy the RT/S so that I can afford to buy two more AT/Ss to replace the two that are wearing out. Anyone want to buy 1 brand new, never been used RT/S?

hi brian - try doing a search on (torsion and lift) you should be able to fit 31's with out doing anything but there's supposed to be a simple way to gain height and wheel clearance on late model x's by adjusting the torsion bars
