I've been picking a lot of things up from the Ranger Forum lately, and this one takes the cake. This is a VERY simple way to change the background color of your Ford Emblem, it doesn't have to be blue! All it takes is some sand paper, paint, and some clear coat. Here are the steps:

Step 1 - You will need to get the actual blue center part of the emblem out of the chrome casing that's around it. To do this, use a hair dryer or heat gun and spend about 5 minutes heating both sides of the emblem. The center part is held on with some apoxy. Once it is heated good, use something flat (such as a knife or small screwdriver) and pry the center part out.

Step 2 - Once you have the center part out, sand the back until all of the left over apoxy and the blue part is off. It will look a clear/white color when you sand all of the blue paint off. I used 150 grit sandpaper to do this because it was the only thing I had around the house. Once all the blue paint is off the back of the center part, wet sand LIGHTLY to smoothen everything out.

Step 3 - Mask off the front of the emblem, and spray the sanded side with a color of your choice (I chose black). Allow to dry THROUGHLY!

Step 4 - When the paint is dry and you remove the tape, you see that the background color is no longer corporate blue, but the color of YOUR choice! If necessary, wet sand the front side of the center piece and spray a few coats of clear coat onto it. I did this because I had a few chips from rocks, etc.

Step 5 - Replace the center piece back into the chrome surround using double sided tape or apoxy. Re-attach the emblem to your Ex, and enjoy!

There's no need to spend $30 online for colored emblems, it's simple to make them yourself!

Turned mine black. :)

Is that emblem off your rear hatch? I remember when I started to take off mine it is held on by some really sticky tar like tape and there are pins that fasten it to the body. Did you also do this to our emblem on the front grill. If so, how did you remove it?

This emblem is the one off the front grill. I had it laying around because I no longer need it with my billet grill insert. The emblem attaches to the front grille with two lock nuts, very easy to remove.

I'm assuming that the rear hatch emblem is made up the same way as the one on the front, but I haven't had a chance to really look. I plan on doing this to the emblem on my rear hatch sometime this week. To remove the emblem, heat it up nice a good, then use some fishing line to get behind it, and with a little force it should pop out. Yes, there are two posts behind it. If you decide to try it, good luck.

What type of tape or glue would you use to reatach the emblem?

I'm really not sure, I'm just going to go to Autozone and ask them what's the best kind of apoxy or double sided tape to use to attatch emblems.

I have always had great success with the 3M double sided tape. Should be able to pick it up at any auto parts store or paint shop.

I have some 3M double sided tape, but it's the white foam kind and it's too thick. I can't find anything thinner either. :(

Is there any detailed pics showing this done step by step. I would love the black ones since I have a black x but I dont wanna screw them up.

Ok, here's the best I can do since I already finished everything up

First, pry the center out of the chrome casing by heating both sides of the emblem up, then using something flat to get under it with

Then, you sand the back of the center piece until it is a clearish white and all the blue paint it gone. When you peel yours off, it'll be a silver color, not black like mine. Then, you mask the front of the center piece off and spray the desired color on the back (your sanding surface)

That's pretty much all there is to it. My first post was more detailed.

Im from over at Rangerforum and Offroadrangers and have just one word of advice, its actually easier to do it if you don't heat up the emblem. I practiced on my grille emblem because I have a billet grill and I didn't care about that emblem. But I heated that one up and actually ended up bending it a little bit. I then did the one on my tailgate and didn't heat it up and it came out perfectly.

I had the opposite results. I couldn't get it off without heat. The apoxy is sprend thin, but it's strong.

First, like I said, I heated the emblem on both sides for about three minutes. Then I went around the emblem with the point of a knife just to loosed it up. After that, I took a small flat-head screwdriver and CAREFULLY! worked it into the groove. Working slowly, you can get the screwdriver under the center part and slowly pry it up. If you try to go at it too fast, you'll crack the plastic.

I might be making this harder than it really is, the hardest part is getting the center emblem out of the chrome casing. If I can do it, you can do it. :D

I wanna try it, but my Ex is blue... I kinda like the blue background. It would be almost sacreligious to paint it anything other than blue or black...
