For my 10,000th post I guess I will start my SAS registry now that the truck is done. Section525's SAS Build thread Specifications Front '83 Wagoneer LP D44 JCW 5-leaf Springs (Stockers) Detroit EZ Locker Spicer 4.88 gears Warn Premium Hubs Rock Equipment Super Boy Howdy Fabricated Knuckles Sky Manufacturing High-steer arms Pro Comp MX6 Shocks Rear Stock 8.8 SOA Sierra 4.88 gears Detroit EZ Spidertrax 5x4.5 to 5x5.5 adapters Stock shocks The Build The LP D44 came out of a 1983 Jeep Wagoneer. I was there when the guy pulled it out from under the Jeep. It was nice to see the condition of the donor before buying the axle. I began the tear-down of the axle and everything looked good inside. I used TT Fab...

I started out with a 01 explorer sport with 230k miles and now i have a 2001 frame with axles out of a late 80 f350 2003 body with 90k on it with stock drivetrain (for now). My plan is to either build the drivetrain i have now (4.0 sohc with a 5rod) or go to an lq4 engine and then 4 link it front and rear with coil overs within the next year or two. I will try to list all the parts i used but i know i will miss some so if there are any questions please ask. The swap has been one for about 8 months and i have put about 15,000 miles on it without a hiccup. No sway bars, trac bars or even a steering stabilizer (plan on doing a stabilizer before winter). This is my winter vehicle (for now) so i have my car i daily and drive my exploder on...
I completed my sas and soa setup on my 00 mountaineer. Front axle is a wagoneer Dana 44 with new wagoneer leafs up front. Steering is handled by a Toyota steering box mounted outside the frame. The first test drive was extremely disappointing. The truck drove terrible and the bump steer was uncontrollable. I added a track bar which helped the bump steer some, but over 30mph it was still totally dangerous. Took it to a shop to get aligned. They said the caster was off 5degrees and that is causing the poor handling. I ordered a pair of axle shims and put them in before attempting to rotate the knuckles. Even with the shims it still drives terrible. It darts around the entire time and if you hit a bump, you never know what way it's going...

I have a 98 explorer xlt that I bought when I was 15. Shes still running but last year I decided to straight axle it on a budget. well i finished my sas with the dana 30, went wheeling a few times, and riooed the front axle out. had the 44 sitting on the side of the house for a few months, and now its installed i used balistic fab radius arm and coil brackets, fabed up my radius arms with dom tubing for the uppers, and my old lowers. track bar is 1.5x .25 dom, and same tubing for my drag link. i used the stock tierod for now, but plan todo dom for tierod also. specs front axle dana 44 76 f150, 4.56, locrite rear axle dana 44 jeep wagoneer, 4.56s, disc conversion, chromo shafts, and yukon full spool. explorer: 93 Limited 5 Speed swap Electric fan harbor freight 12k winch 36in irok superswampers Suspension front rubicon express 6 inch...
swapped in a tj dana 30 using rustys offroad 4.5" coils springs on ballistic fab adjustable coil buckets set 6" ahead of the normal coil bucket mounting location. links are 2x2x.25" square tubing with poly bushings from ruffstuff and trailgear creeper joints on the other end. custom fabbed link mounts just ahead of trans cmember and extensive driver side frame modification for upper link so I could get the suspension characteristics I wanted. netted about 3" of lift overall which required cutting the engine crossmember out of the way of the panhard bar which is made with ruffstuff heims and 1 3/4" dom with .25 wall thickness. truck flexes really well, future plans are for a wagoneer d44 to replace the d30, using the same suspension...
This was a buddie/customer build I recently did, I look at it as practice. My wife has a 98 XLT V8 explorer and in the spring shes getting a D30 and 33's.
