WARNING: This swap will be longer than bmxking's  Thanks to tig for a real steal that I couldnt pass up ($50), it all started with a d44 from a 73' Bronco. This means its drum braked, coil sprung with LP housing complete hub to hub with r/a's. But, its matching width. :D Its in great shape as far as EB axles are concerned. It has 3.50's which upon inspection are in PERFECT condition. Not one chip on any of the ring gear teeth. Also the rust isnt too bad, its simply surface rust, nothing damaging. Also most of the bolts so far are coming off very well, only breaking a few. Not bad for 31 years of rust. So far in the plans are yukon 4.88's with full spool or lincon locker. Disk brake conversion VIA junkyard or...
That's right, I couldn't keep it under wraps any longer, and so the first stage of the conversion and re-vamp of the whole truck begins. In short, which I'll go into detail once I get back to labratory this evening is: Complete front clip transformataion in sheet metal work, including custom fenders and hood, front bumper w/winch and lights. Slick roof line. Complete drivetrain conversion (from engine, tranny to transfer case) and custom wiring harness. Super soft 6.5" Rock Crawler front spring and hiem joints on the adjustable extended radius arms. With 5.13's front a rear with already existing Lincoln Locker out back and LSD clutch style modified in the front. Although there are about 80% of the parts already...
Just finished the rear axle today, SOA with Aussie locker and 4.56 gears. Rear springs are shot from towing and still need to be replaced. Also I need to weld shock mounts on the axle. This will all be done after the front axle is installed. It is a HP Dana 30 with gears and a locker to be added in a few months. Front suspension will be a Y-link with XJ coils and Ballistic brackets. Steering and panhard will be stock XJ for now. Tires are 33/12.5/15 Interco Truxus M/Ts on Soft 8 wheels with stock Ford center caps.
... or SAS pt.II, or SAS redeux, or axle remix thread. :p: As some of you know, ive recently got a 94 sport that is the typical fullwidth HP44 with coils/arms, fullwidth 9" type swap. Its currently on radial 36" Iroks. Right now im lowering it down 4" and extending the wheelbase a couple of inches. It wheels great but its just too tall for what i want to do. Ive got some Bilstein 7100's in the mail and my general idea is to make this more of a dual sport type rig that can get it on the rocks and also be able to blast some fire roads and play on the sandbars here in the summer. Currently the truck has 4" blocks under the back and a "W" shaped set of hybrid 4 door packs. Im going to take the blocks out, throw on a freshened set...
Well as a few of you know my X was messeed up a bit due to a accident. so i have been looking for a new plan. i have my axles (d44/ford9") all i need is to choose what i am gonna do. i was thinking about thiS: In the front i plan to use whild horse 5.5 inch coils, for radius arms i plan to use this. they are 12 inches longer that the stock radius arms.i have the whole frame from a 78 f-150 that i plan to get the coil buckets and steering off of. i want to use a 37 inch tire and use 4.88 gears i dont see a problem with any of this so i need some info to see if i have missed anything
I will keep this first post updated with my progress so people don't have to weed through all the boring crap associated with these buildup threads. So far I have: Front axle: Dana 60 35 spline kingpin high pinion from a 79 f-250/350 detroit locker dedenbear knuckles 5.38 gears alloy usa shafts longfield u-joints warn hubs (should have went with drive flanges) high steer arms with full hydraulic steering Steering: 2x8 double ended cylinder from surpluscenter.com steering valve out of an old forklift misc. hoses and fittings from surpluscenter.com Rear axle: Dana 60 30 spline low pinion from a 79 f-250/350 (should have went with a 14 bolt) full spool 5.38 gears Disk brake conversion Tires/wheels: 16.5" hummer h1 8 bolt double...
I am consolidating my build thread and the sas build into one thread so below is a link to my original build thread in case anyone has too much time on their hands and wants to see how this whole ordeal started. notajeep_wv build thread the next step.. SAS parts update 2/18 Its time for a SAS, time to take making Jeeps look bad to the next level lol Lets keeps track of how much this is costing me so I can look back at it later and think of all the other things I could have done with the money. what ended up on the truck.. 74 EB D44 with track bar, steering, 2 sets of RAs - $200 F150 knuckles, spindles, hubs, rotors, calipers - $35 MileMarker premium hubs - $80 4.89 G2 gear set - $175 4.88 G2 gear set - $200 D44 install kit - $80...
well here starts the 3rd version of my truck, right now the 1ton HP D60 was pulled, and the guy paid me for it, and then i paid for front and rear rockwells so here is the planned setup for this version -1992 explorer -4.0V6 (when the engine goes ill decide what goes in, 350k logged miles and still goin) -carried over from the last setup, chucks SAS hanger kit, and 12" lift springs, which puts me at 19" for that whats new: -Front and rear 2.5 ton REO/Military Rockwell Axles, Ujoint style axles -4" welded perch/stand in the front -larger perches in the back to compensate for the smaller springs, also welded -Oversized Ladder bar setup to eliminate any axle wrap -crossover steering, with possible later addition of...
Ok kiddies, time for my bi-annual rebuild thread:p: This time I won't be messing with the suspension...well, maybe the coilovers. I may need new coils so I don't have so much uptravel but I'll deal with that much later. Since i'm barely working progress will be slow since I'll need a few parts and whatnot to get my rig functional again. Main things I need to purchase are new leaf springs. They are totally shot and to have them rebuilt I can buy a new set of Toy springs which i'm gonna try out. In the mean time, i've been removing stuff that either is damaged and won't be used again or just removing to get it out of the way while I work on stuff. Here's my list so far: Front bumper tubework: This will get reworked to accommodate...
Okay, the time has come to start this swap. While everyone was off goofing around in Moab over the weekend, I pulled my old 4.0L and 5spd from my sport. Here are the details: The patient - 1994 Explorer Sport 4.0L ohv 5spd manual 151K miles The donor - 2004 Ranger 4.0L sohc 5spd manual 7K miles My plan is to use as much of the original 94 electronics as possible. Yes, I could wire in the 04 electronics and computer, but I just don't want to. I'm trying to keep this swap simple so it "could" be done in a weekend. Other details to sort out are: Oil pan AC Front Dress Fuel Line Vaccum lines Electrical Pictures will follow shortly as I take them. If anyone has done this before and can share their expience...
Well, I figured this would be a good single source to document my next project. I've just finished a 10 month race truck build and finally got it out of my garage and parked on the side yard so I can start my exploder next! So here's the info to make this whole project make a bit of sense... I picked up this explorer, it's considered a '91. The catch with it though is it's a mutt... It's actually 4 expos pieced together to build something that runs. List of things wrong with it, no cruise control, no heater, no a/c, turn signals don't work, power windows sorta kinda sometimes work, power locks sorta kinda sometimes work, missing a lot of the smog stuff and won't pass smog here in Nevada, doesn't run right, engine/trans/t-case...
Dana 44 out of a 1989 Grand Wagoneer. My plan is to get as little llift as possible as I dont feel like removing my body lift. So I am using the stock Waggy knuckles, spindles, hubs, rotors, calipers, and likely using new waggy steering parts as well and keeping it 6 lug. I will leave it spring under as to keep the lift minimal, and use 4" lifted springs. Doing it this way will save me from buying high steer knuckles and a high steer setup. Is this best way, maybe not, but it saves me alot money and keeps my lift to around 5". Now for those who are asking themselves why am I even bothering with this SAS. My reasons are that my Sport Trac goes through UCA and lower ball joints every other month, and I destroy tires in under...
