Offroad Projects

Big projects... Lifts, Swaps, etc... IMPORTANT As the subject use your name, or the name of your truck, and the name of the project. Such as Superlift 5.5" installation, Dana 44 conversion, etc.

Solid Axle Swap Registry

If you have completed a solid axle swap on your Explorer and would like to share the results with others this is the place to do it:D This isn't the place to talk about a work in progress, rather a place for the FINAL results, specs, instructions etc

Because of some future rear suspension modifications I'm planning out, I'm looking into this as a possible solution. I know some people have used the Bronco 2 tank, some the E-150 tank, and I'm sure some other tanks have been used as well. I haven't found all the info I'm looking for, and I have a few thoughts/concerns, so here goes. Anyone in California done it on a street-driven Explorer, and have you had good or bad experiences with smog checks? Any issues using a tank from an OBD1 vehicle in my OBD2 vehicle? It's very important to me to be able to do a regular smog check without worry. Mechanically I would use all stock smog equipment, but visually there's the potential for failure. I know some people have done it with a...
Hi everyone! First time posting on ExplorerForums. I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT 5.0 with a BorgWarner 4406 4WD Transfer Case conversion. (4WD works very well by the way ). I have a stock front axle and I do a good amount of off-roading. Now should I build up that stock axle to make it suitable for off-roading or should I convert it to a solid front axle? I was thinking of a Dana44 or maybe something else if anyone has any suggestions? And if solid front axle is there any guides? Thanks
Bought this 1992 Ranger a while back, it is in great mechanical shape and was owned by some old lady most of its life. After deciding it was too clean to cut up for a 4.0 swap, I recently decided it would make a great DD/wheeler/hunting and exploration rig. The 20 year old suspension is sagged out, the shocks are on their last leg and the 31" BFG ATs rub up front on bigger bumps. Time for a build up and some major improvements. I have been scavenging pull & pay and e-bay for parts for a while now, have a lot left over from other projects and will borrow a few things from the '91 as I go. Specs: 4.0, m50d, 1354E, standard cab long-box Plans: Front Axle: ’96 XJ high pinion Dana 30 SAS w/ 4.56 gears, Detroit Truetrac...
Here is a picture of my RBV pre 2011: In 2010 I had an unfortunate incident in my long travel 2000 Ranger 4x4. Moving through a signalized intersection, I had someone make an illegal left hand turn. They hit me right behind the driver's side front axle. My Ranger did not fair so well: It took over 2.5 years to work out a reasonable settlement on the truck. While the insurance was haggling over the value of my truck, I started driving a 3rd Gen 4Runner. This was the first SUV that I have owned. It has been a great vehicle, and it made me realize that an Explorer might have potential. The nice thing about the Explorer is that many of the parts that I was able to salvage off of the Ranger will transfer over...

My DD has turned into a project vehicle. I am building it up to be a capable overland/expedition rig for long range trips to include camping and all around adventuring. :) We have a few trips tentatively planned already. I just need to get this thing going as we have much that we want to see. I will be making a roof rack to carry a few items, but most will be carried in a trailer, so to keep from putting too much weight up top. Also, it will be nice to have the roof top tent set up on top of the trailer, so I can unhook and leave the "base camp" in place and go wheeling. Here is what I have so far: 2000 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0 BW4406 Black Rock 942 16x8 steel wheels 255/85/16 BFG KM2s load range E Still needed: Rear...
Well I'm taking an early night off tonight from my SAS on my 99 explorer so I figure I'll start my write up on it... My ride is a Cheery 99 Ex XLT leather interior all the bells and whistles First off I'm doing a D30 for a few reasons... 1- Wanting to keep the ABS 2- Stock(ish) width 3- Wheel bolt pattern same 4- CHEEPER... I know, "why not just do a 44 and get it done. Your gona wheel the thing" Well Ya I'm gona wheel it but not that hard besides I like breaking stuff...lol... Out back it's getting SOA, AAL, and a lincoln locker... Gears will be (eventually) 4.56 or 4.10's will deside when the tires are bought, which will be desided on when the lift is in and I see what will look best 33's or 35's??? Springs are originally out of a...
Well the original plan when I bought John's truck was to go ahead and disassemble it and use it for parts for mine. I decided instead to go ahead and keep it together and replace what needed to be replaced, and mine can still stay the road queen that it is hah. So I thought I'd post up some pictures so far.... How the Trac stood when we arrived to pick her up. Another... Getting her loaded up on my Tahoe... Randall trying to figure out where we can stuff more of the parts that go with her... Kris double checking Randall's tie down work to make sure it doesn't fly off while we're driving back home :) Late night entry into the garage after a very long haul to Houston and back home - Large thanks for Kris and Randall for all...
Hello everyone! It's been a while since I've posted but I have a few questions that I think some of you can help me find answers to. I have a '91 ex that I fixed up and has been my daily driver/commuter/road trip vehicle for the last two years. You can read more about the car here: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/91-ex-budget-build-4-0-or-4-0.426232/ So It's been 30k since I finished and the ex is still running pretty good, I'll average 20-22mpg and even saw over 24 on my most recent trip to yosemite! I've had to do some maintenance and stuff along the way but nothing out of the ordinary, overall it's been pretty reliable. This last camping trip has inspired my gf and me to take a longer (1-2 month) road...
Well I figure I'd start a thread of this. I'm really not sure where this will go.... So I picked up Keepers 2000 Explorer Sport, with plans to make into a fun toy to wheel. However after getting it home I'm starting to have 2nd thoughts. It's in pretty bad shape. Much worse then I expected:( The whole driver side is toast, and I'm not even sure it can be pushed out enough to be even close to what it was. There is a good 1 1/2" gap between the door jam, where the quarter panel stretched inward. Looks like the front end A-arm may be bent, and the rear axle may be gone too. Everything shifted back there in the accident, and looks like the axle or a shaft is bent. :( So at this point it's really going to come...
Hi, I have a 96 4.0 explorer XLT Currently it sits stock on 31 inch tires. I'm making it into my budget monster. I like the engine not the transmission though. So here's the question, I want to make around 125hp at the wheel and 187 Tora. What are the best mods at decent prices? I'm trying to do at least 300-400hp/Tora cause it's going to be the 4x4 rally/ drift car that can go camping too. I already am planning install a slap gear shifter and relocating the brake. Name some performance mods (:
