This is my second and hopefully much more helpful writeup on converting the 95-01 gauge cluster to LEDs. I have tried 3 different types of 12v wedge based 194 replacements and I have finally found the one that puts out enough light and lights up the cluster evenly. Here were my candidates. From Left to Right: Inverted Wedge LED, Refractor LED, SMD LEDs The Results Inverted Wedge LED: Even Light output, but not bright enough Refractor LED: Horribly Uneven light output, Short Lifespan (they started blowing on me) SMD (Surface Mount Diode): Even Light output and very bright (brighter the the 194LL Bulbs) Getting to the cluster: Step 1 Remove the Radio Step 2 Remove the 2 screws (circled in red)...
After some exploration, I’ve figured out how to modify the foglamp circuit for a 2001 Explorer so that the foglamps stay on with the high beams. This mod is actually much easier, IMHO, than for the earlier models. First, I located the relay box. It’s mounted to the same plate that holds the bottom of the airbox. I got into it, and here’s what I found: 1. There are sockets for a total of six relays, two large (the size of a conventional Bosch relay) and four smaller relays, in a 1 2 1 2 configuration. The six sockets were arranged like this, with socket 1 being toward the front of the vehicle: 1 2 3 4 5 6 On my Explorer, socket 1 was empty from the factory...
Here is my writeup for doing a Bi-Xenon HID Projector Retrofit for 96-01 Explorers, and HID Fog Light conversion for 99-01 Explorers. Parts: Clear Housings E46 Bi-Xenon Projectors 3" Projector Shrouds D2S HID Kit @ 5000k (Now 4300k) H1 HID Kit @ 5000k (Now 4300k) High Beam Controllers 3 Relays (30amp) 2 Diodes (3amp) Fuse block (or inline) To start you need to open up the headlight housings First remove all the mounts from the housing Then put the light on a baking tray with tinfoil in the oven and preheat the oven to 400 degrees. put the headlight in the oven and wait about 5-10 min, CONSTANTLY MONITOR IT and make sure it doesn't get soft. Now its time to modify the housing to fit the protector Cut out all the plastic...
I decided to make my own smoked tail light tint. It is static-cling window film in 20% limo black from Wal-Mart, or i have seen it other places also. Then cut to fit. The tint is a thin static cling vinyl unlike real tint, so you can use and reuse them as many times as you want. The tint comes in a roll. It cost me $10.19, and hour of my time. I made the templates by cutting a hole in a sheet of paper, taping it to the light and tracing the shape to the paper. Then I cut the shape and transferred it to the tinting. This is a pic of the cut outs and the stock tail light. Make sure it is clean.. The tint is the vinyl, static type, but you still apply it like the regular window tint. You can use baby shampoo and...
This is my how to for installing signal mirrors on the 3rd Gen Ex. I know that a lot of you know how to do most of this, but it is a how to so I must assume you know nothing. I am not trying to insult anyone’s intelligence. Before I begin, I would like to thank a few people: RickOTR – for finding the signal mirror kit and pointing it out to me. NHarris – for the OEM mirrors. Without them this wouldn’t have happened. Explorer Forum – For obvious reasons. Thanks Rick, for a great place for us to swap info and hang out! I purchased the Signal Mirror Kit from www.hillbankmotorsports.com. Cost was $39.99 + SH. A huge Bang for the buck. The kit is for the 2001-2005 Ranger, but it is a direct replacement for the 2002-2005...
Here Is how to convert your dome lights from light bulbs to LEDs. Starting with the Driver and Front Pax What you will need 20 LEDs 55,000mcd 20 Resistors to bring the voltage down from 12volts to what your LEDs are rated at. Mine were 3.6v Radio Shack Project board First cut 2 pieces of the project board to 1.35" X1.35" Then arrange your LEDs on the board the way you want them. I used 10 on each board, 6 as spot lights and 4 on the corners as floods (grind the tips flat on the 4). Solder a resistor to each + lead of each LED and wire all the - leads together. Use Hot glue to attach each LED. Use clear nail polish to refinish the 4 ground down LEDs. Test Now disassemble the over head console and remove the 2 bulb holders...
Hey guys, I know I've posted this question before, but I'm hoping to attract more comments, AND I referred to the puddle lights as just "side view mirror" lights before, so hopefully, now that I have the correct terminology, I can elicit a greater response. ANYWAYS, I was wondering if anyone out there knows how I can get to the bulbs, AKA the puddle lights under my side view mirrors. I want to change the colors, but I'm scared to just pop the under-glass, and risk breaking it. I've already made some severe scratches to it attempting this. HELP!!!
If you have handle controlled interior lights and they are always staying on and you have the door ajar light on, you are going to love this fix.. It's an easy and a cheap fix, and is the way to perform your maintenance of this switch... Put your fuse and bulbs back in, roll your windows up and get a can of wd40 with the straw...start with your drivers door...from the outside pull the handle up and where the handle goes thru the door, squirt a little wd40 in both those slits...open the door and just work the outside handle a few times...go to the passenger door and do the same....thats all there is to it...good luck...:D Update ...If you have an X, You may also need to wd40 your rear hatch latches and If this does not fix your...
LED light bulbs have higher resistance than ordinary incandescent light bulbs. This will cause a problem on most vehicles since ordinary thermal flashers, and even most modern electronic flashers are designed to cause the existing turn signal light bulb to flash at a higher rate. Sometimes this is referred to as "hyperblinking". This is intentionally done in order to indicate that the other bulb which is part of a set on one side is burned out. These flashers won't detect the LED bulbs, and will cause the light to always flash at a higher rate. One solution is to use high wattage resistors to shunt (attach in parallel) across the turn signal LED bulbs. This will simulate the existence of an incandescent bulb. The problems with this is...
I have a 2002 explorer ltd. Out of the blue, the interior lights stay on after the engine is shut off. The never go out (mirror lights also) I have lubed every door hinge...nothing, I make sure all doors are closed...nothing, those damn lights won't go out. One other thing..the drivers side door trim door lock switch doesn't work, after I shut the engine off, unless I turn off the interior lights but rolling down the swithh until it clicks off. If anyone has any insight i would appreciate it. I am so frustrated with this. IF I have to I will bring it to the dealer. Thanks
I wanted to do this for a long time, and I finally got some time last week. Very cheap only cost about $8.00 used 5 15,000 MCD 5mm Blue LEDs on each side, mounted on project boards that can be found at Radio Shack. I Highly recommend this, it gets a lot of attention and is a nice accent to any vehicle. This is practice for my chassis under glow project Im doing this spring. What do you guys think?
How to increase the headlight brightness on a Generation-1 Explorer: My Gen-1 1994 explorer uses 9004 halogen bulbs, which only put out around 700 lumens. I converted it to use 9007 halogen bulbs which puts out around 1000 lumens. A bulb swap from the OEM 9004's to the much brighter 9007's has been discussed in various forums (including here in 2001) and thought I'd write up a more detailed how-to guide. And determine whether one needs to upgrade the entire wiring harness or not. Plus see if the resulting beam pattern is okay with the stock reflectors. Instructions: 1. Buy: - New 9007 halogen bulbs. ( I used Silvania 9007XV bulbs. About $20/pair at Autozone. ) - 9004 or 9007 wiring harness. This three wire cable...
'97 high-mount brake light "rebuild" FINALLY DONE! EDIT: Adding the details to the first post now that the project is finished. OK, I finally got tired of trying to figure out this stupid 21" neon high-mount brake light problem, and in the process ended up with two lamp assemblies. So, after searching for the best fix, I finally decided to gut one of the assemblies, and build by own LED array to put inside it. Here is what I did .... After removing the assembly from the truck, and the lamp from the assembly, I baked the lamp in the oven at about 200-250 for 15-20 minutes, or just long enough to be able to "peal" off the lens. After doing that, removing the neon lamp, and cleaning it up, here is what I had. Here is the...
