This is work in progress, but standby... More coming soon. The first thing we need to cover is: Why? "Just by a set for the 2005 Sport Trac" you say? Sure, I could, but I bought these when they were listed as 2001-2005 over 3 years ago and life got in the way. New job, big move, new house, and an actual shop - time to install them! I matched them up with a Felpro exhaust manifold gasket I had and looking through the slit in the fenderwell, I called it good. Not quite.
I've been dreaming about this project for a long time. The spark started when I took my Explorer ice racing. I entered my Explorer in a class that was mostly, well all all-wheel drive cars. A few WRX a Mistubishi Evo 8, and a very fast Audi RS4. I had fun but the Ex is no all-wheel drive car. So one day I was reading this forum about the V8 Explorer all-wheel drive transfer case and the author stated the power split was 65-35. I had just read an artical about the new Focus RS and how it can shift the power to the same ratio to make it able to slide and handle more like a rear drive car with power oversteer. Well? What if a find a short bed, regular cab Ranger (just so happens that Ranger setup has the same wheel base as the 4 door V8...
I picked up a rust free 2wd 97 big flare sport with the SOHC 4.0l about a month ago now. This thing is SPOTLESS!!! I bought it for Penny's with a bad transmission in it and the plan to turn it into a 12 second turbo'd street/drag truck. As of last week I finished swapping in a 5 speed manual transmission I built for it with the lower gear ratio out of the 4 cyl ranger. 3.73 posi rear end, I put on a custom bent Magnaflow stainless exhaust, lowered it 3" and put a set of 18x10 Ford Racing "Cobra" wheels on it. The difference in power and acceration is incredible with the 5 speed compared to the 5r55e. I'm not entirely happy with the M5ODR1 though and will be swapping it out for a Tremec before I turbo it. I'm also swapping...
Thanks to Explorer Forum, I've been infected by the need to modify my Explorer! :D Thanks for all the great write-ups and advice! So far I've only installed new wheels and tires and a bull bar. Will be working on installing Flowmaster Delta 40s and KC driving lights this weekend. Also debating whether or not I should lower it by an inch.. I had to cut some of the plastic inner fender trim off so the tires wouldn't rub near full lock. Let me know what you think! :salute:

Although there are many posts on valve train timing I have yet to see one that shows a picture of the cam lobe position of #1 and #5 cylinder. It appears to me that the reference to the crankshaft at TDC for #1 and #5 leaves the cam on the right side with the offcenter slot for the cam holding tool 180 degrees out of time....the left side is fine, it just evacuated..the right side shows lobe to be standing straight up, a 1/2 turn from end of compression, and the offcenter slot is opposite the left. Any suggestions??--guess i could include the details of the engine--- 4.0 L sohc (E)..125,000 mi.---replacing , #1 piston, wrist pin, and rod---main and rod bearings. piston rings...and all timing chains and sprockets.
