Tires & Wheels

This is kind of a safety issue that I've noticied a few companies are having. My brother bought some Eagle Alloys for his Ranger and had them installed at the shop I work at (I didn't work on it thankfully). Anyhow, few months pass and he was coming home from college and his right rear wheel almost fell off. The lugs somehow backed off. Now - there's no hard evidence that it was because of the wheels needing to be retorqued - but what makes it harder is that he was up at Virgina Tech the day before with a damn UVA sticker in his back window. Pranksters - maybe? Anyhow, so he bought a new wheel and he was good to go. Months later I had to go to a 4wd shop and get some lug nuts and I noticed at the bottom a disclaimer: So...
...This is a compilation of info and links I have found very useful on this site, including items I have learned over the years...Just my favorite links to the noted subject's...:D ...The wheel size does not make the tire rub...The tire and backspacing cause/eliminate this...;) ...The preferred size wheel for the Explorer and Ranger is, 15"x8" 5-4.5 with 3.75 Backspacing...You can fit up to a 12.50" wide tire on this wheel.. ...If you look at the tire size and lift charts here, they will give you the correct amount of lift needed for minimal, to no rubbing with the stock size wheels,(15"-16" tall)...A 15x10 wheel basically will give you a deeper dished wheel and usually, the back spacing size they come with will cause the...
I have a 2005 automatic 4×4 Explorer XLT, all the bells & whistles, sans the 289 V8, & I have replaced rear parking brakes shoes & hardware kit, new rotors, pads, & calipers, also had rear diff serviced & new sway bar links put on. (All parts from TRQ/1A Auto) However, every time I start it & it gets even just a lil bit warmed up, every time the rear wheels make a revolution, I get a whining or winding sound from the driver side, & possibly passenger, rear wheels. It comes. And it goes. It calls for 235 70 16s, but I put some brand-new Dunlop 235 60 16s on it that I bought for $5 apiece, & was wondering if that could be my problem? Any thoughts/input appreciated! Also, it NEVER makes the noise while in the air! Only when actually being...
Hey guys, recently I found a cut in the sidewall of one of my tires and didn't think much of it as when I got them (from walmart) I got the road hazard warranty. I run 31X10.5r15 Goodyear Wrangler Authority A/T's on stock rims (Link to tires on Walmart) Last week I went in and they told me the tires had worn down from 18/32" to 15/32" and they were only going to replace 1 tire. I pushed back against that because I know that if nothing else you need to replace them in pairs. They ended up not having time to work on it, so I left for the day. I made an appointment and came back today and was told that 3 of the tires were at 15/32" and the damaged tire was at 14/32". I told them it was a 4WD truck and that at 3/32" under new size that...
Hear me out. I've got a '94 2 Door 2WD with the 5 speed that I drive daily, but I also drive it on gravel/dirt fairly often. I'm a hiker and just generally like playing around in the woods so I find myself on 15-20 mile access road drives often. I run 255/70 R15 General AT2's on the stock 15x7 aluminum wheels and they do great out on trails, even at the 28psi that I run on the road. I don't get into anything too aggressive because it is just a 2WD. I've been interested in trying out airing down to help with comfort on rougher terrain. A 10 mile drive to a trailhead isn't too bad because I'm hyped up to go hiking, But the 10 mile drive out the next day isn't always as enjoyable, especially after a heavy hike. I've been putting...
Needing some assistance guys. So here's the problem.... Vehicle: 2005 Explorer Eddie Bauer V6 Over 300000 miles maintained pretty consistently So 2 days ago, thanks to bald ass tires I got caught in the snow. Had a company come out to winch me out. Now a couple times along the way of pulling me out to the freeway he had to jerk it kinda hard to get me free after getting restuck a few times along the way. Now that I'm out the following is going on. First off... Had it in 4 low the whole time. Current Issues: 1. ABS light always on 2. 4X High keeps coming on 3. AdvanceTrak stays off 4. Jerky when accelerating 5. Rough/grinding feeling/noise My background with vehicles is I'm not a mechanic but I know my way around under the...
Hey guys! just picked up my 18 explorer limited and swapped wheels with a buddy who had a 17 xlt. however once they were switched over I cant get them to register to the car. i tried doing te start button 3x press brake then start button 3x agian method, also tired the hazard button 3x method and it wouldn't reset. I then took it into a Big O tires and they couldnt get them to read either. Did they change the frequency between 17 and 18?
Just wanted to let people know my experience with the Pro Comp ES9000 Shock. They replaced the Rancho RS5000. I thought I would go with the Pro Comp, big mistake, these do not work well with the 2000 Explorer. Did not get the right one's since the website had wrong pictures and what not, but ended up with RS5000 in the rear and the Pro Comps in the front. Well, the Pro Comps are very noisy, especially on the highway. Do ya think they will do any harm or just be noisy? I'm thinking, I might replace them. Opinions?
Hi guys and gals I recently upgraded to a 2004 explorer limited in pearl white... love this thing and with only 68k miles shes running like a dream!!!! The only real issue with the truck (aside from what I assume is having to do the blend door AGAIN on another truck) is the "chrome" wheels are peeling and it throws the whole look off... I know older mustang wheels fit for the most part or so that's what I read... well I stumbled across a set of black American racing torque thrust (bullitt) style wheels locally... They are 17x7.5 45mm offset 72.6mm hub 6.020 back spacing.... Would these wheels fit and work without having to use spacers...? Also I could just source wheels from a mustang website like americannmuscle 17x8 30mm offset 5.72...
BiggbirdNew Member Hi all, I'm working with a local mechanic to build my 2000 Explorer into mountain utility vehicle to traverse newly cut trails in the bush. It's in the shop now for a 3 inch suspension lift. I'll be driving around and over wet clay fields sharp rocks and tree stumps carrying loads of lime and fertilizer. I'm looking for recommendations for a tire that can do these things. E load, strong sidewalls... Brand as well as maximum size width Etc. For deep snow and ice I've been using glacier chains and they work great. Will never need to take it down the mountain to paved road except to drive to town 10 miles to get gas Etc. Thank you!
