my '06 explorer came with a tag attached to the keys when new.
I can't figure out how to post a picture, but it is black print on white, has a barcode followed by a 5 character alpha-numeric phrase.
The service manager at the dealer told me when I bought the car new that it could be used to make new keys (but not program them) and that it would be more accurate than making actual copies.
Can anyone tell me if this is accurate? Or is my memory failing me...
If so, has anyone actually had keys made from one of these?

Thanks

If it's alpha numeric then I'm guessing it's your key code.
You can bring it to your local Ford dealer and order new keys already cut from Rotunda...or you can just have them cut/trace the key you have now while you wait, then of course program it after.

As per partsman109 !!

You key code which the dealer can cut also a computer set of keys. I know others do it that way Ford should as well. They'll want to see you ownership as well when doing that to ensure its for your vehicle!!! You can call any you'd think of going to for info and cost.
