I own a 98 ford explorer auto fwd XLT , when i take off and pick up speed you hear a winding noise when you come to a stop it starts to make a grinding noise them clanking noise but after you drive it abit it stops for the moment. please give me a idea whats up

I have an option of rebuilding one of two engines. A 3.8L police or a 4L. Both engines still run and are approaching 300,000 KM. Which would be the best candidate?
