01' Ford Ranger 5r44e no D or R

trying to fix or if necessary replace 72yr mothers tranny. The transmission does not have drive or reverse but does go in D1,D2 the fluid is red and does not smell burnt. She said it just started doing it, the day before it drove fine and did not hear any unusual noises from tranny. My first step was to do an ODBII scan which showed no codes my next step is to check Rev.,Drive solenoids but don't have book to see which ones they are. I have knowledge of transmissions and have rebuilt a 700r4. I'm trying to get by as least expensive for her. Any ideas or help?

This is a classic condition when the input sprag has failed, this will require the removal and disassembly of at least the front half of the transmission.

Nothing electrical will cause this.

Ok so either way I need to take it out if I'm going to do that I might as well put in a rebuilt one in and rebuild the broken one for a spare she needs this vehicle soon
