177k miles...lately my 1997 Mounty has been shifting real high. When I accelerate from a stop, it reaches about 4k RPM before shifting (much higher than usual), but maintains about 25000-3k or so depending on the speed I am driving. It seems sluggish to get through 1st gear. Any one ever experience a similar issue. I have had this issue intermittently in the past, but now it seems to be becoming more frequent. It also seems to be associated with a higher than normal idle, a bit above 1000 when hot

Check the transmission fluid level.

OD light ever flash? Does it drive in manual second from a stop?

Of course check the basics but the 1-2 accumulator spring will commonly break and cause late shifting.

Late upshift combined with high idle says your Throttle position sensor might be crapped out. If it is reading higher than 1v at idle I'd replace it.
