My wife's 2000 Explorer with V6 4.0L has been difficult to start, runs fine once started. We checked it out with a fuel pressure test. The fuel manifold pressure read at 0 when first connecting the gauge with engine off. When starting the pressure holds at 0 then jumps to 65psi once the fuel makes it up the line and then holds steady. After shutting off the engine the pressure falls to about 35 pretty rapidly then continues to drop until it hits 0 again.

I believe that the issue is the check valve in the fuel pump.

My question is if it is acceptable to skip replacing the fuel pump for now and just install an inline check valve near where the fuel line exits the tank?

Or is there some reason why that's a bad idea?

I would think it wouldn’t be the best solution, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be a big improvement.
