I recently had the heads conditioned after a head gasket blew. I have an ’01 explorer with the lovely 4.0 SOHC engine. When I opened the baggy of lash adjusters from the shop there was this part in the bag. It's made of nylon I believe, about ¼” thick and 5-1/8” long, It tapers approx. 3/4" in from each end down to 1/8”. I don’t remember this part when I pulled the heads off the engine. I called the mechanic that rebuilt the heads and he said that it fell out of one of the heads when he had them on his bench. I’ve checked my Haynes manual, I’ve looked at the blow-up diagram at the dealer’s parts counter. I’ve tried to talk to a Ford service mechanic but I can’t get past the service counter. According to them it takes up too much of their precious time.

Does anyone know what the part is and where it is supposed to install?? I’m at a loss...... I'm afraid I don't know how to post a picture of it. I can email it to you though.

      THANKS! Greg

Sounds like a cam chain guide, maybe?

That is an oil return restrictor used with the newer tall tensioner from the 00m12 TSB. It goes in the oil gallery behind the pipe plug on the drivers side head.

Scucci, You are right! The machine shop mechanic put the pipe plug back on without the restrictor inside. No wonder I couldn't figure it out. Thanks! This forum is great!
