2003 ford explorer sport xlt slipping in drive/reverse

i'm a newbie and need to find out what my issue is before going to get my
ford explorer looked at. it's a 2003 ford explorer sport xlt with about 120k miles on it.
recently, when you put it in either drive or reverse, the engine just revs and barely moves
for either selection when pressing the gas. now, in 1 or 2, it drives fine.
i read that it could be the overdrive sprag? seems like that would be very costly.
any other possibilites?

Your description of the problem sure sounds like a failed input sprag, even if its not the problem will most likely require the removal and rebuild of the transmission.
