86 ranger spring in air box tube

So there's a spring looking thing in the tube running from my air box to the throttle body. what exactly is this supposed to do? 1986 2.9l automatic 4x4 manual T-case ranger

That spring is there for noise reduction on the intake. I removed it on my 87 ranger. Sounds a lot better with it removed.
