Does anyone know if the 93 PCM will directly swap into the 92 harness?

Stock, 1992 model explorers were equipped with 145 hp. 1993 model year was matched to 160 hp.

Im guessing if i used the 93 computer, i might be entitled to an extra 15 hp?

Since ill be putting some life back into the OHV with a minior rebuild (hopefully the bottem end is still decent). This could be benificial to help squeek out as much power as i can.

I am under the impression the difference is all computer related.

I thought about it, would it be the 02 sensors to not work out? since i have one and the 93PCM is going to be looking for 2?

There were actually other reasons for the HP increase in the 93's besides the PCM. For instance, my 93 computer is set up for a multi-port fuel injection, where it fires each fuel injector individually. In 91-92 models, a group of three injectors would fire. Here's the tricky thing though, some 93 computers are multi-port, and some are the older 91-92 group style.

I thought that the heads on the 93 were different than the 92's also, and that the computers had a different program to accomodate them...i'm really not sure about that though, would take some some searching to figure that out

Im pretty sure they were just stronger castings

What about a 91 computer? 155 hp stock... so 10 extra hp,

the castings on 91-92 are iron, while 93-94 its aluminum. Or it might be the other way around.

If I remember correctly there are 4 different PCM's that were made for the 91-94 explorers. All were programmed differently depending on specs such as 2wd or 4x, weight..ie 2door vs 4door and so on. So you would need to match the bar code/ serial numbers in order for it to work right. Also you can only switch auto for auto and manual for manual...meaning transmissions must be the same. Make sure it is not set for EGR system too...as yours did not have one.

The heads are interchangable.. The 90-92ish has 90tm heads.. the 93 and 94 have 93tm heads.. My '92 has the 93tm heads on it.. It is just a better blank..

A 91-92 PCM is different then the 93 and 94 how?

91-92 has a single 02 sensor, MAP sensor, and EGR.

93 has no MAP dual 02's, no EGR

94 has same + EGR

Now it might run??? hahaha but not correctly.
This is how you know if a PCM will work, aside from the calibration code. What sensors and trans were with it.

When I have had PCM issues, I have swapped in other 4.0L PCM's just for testing. I ran my A4LD equipped truck with a 5 speed PCM for about 200 miles.

Brian Herron (formerly of Apten) once told me there was also a California Emissions PCM program for 91-94's, that featured slightly less power in exchange for lower emissions. I get the feeling that Ford had MANY different programs for the PCMs--probably the same is true with the newer models.

it is true for sure, that is why there are different calibration codes for each year. A friend of mine has a 93 4 door that would fall flat on its face after 3500 RPM. After a week of diagnosis we decided it was in fact the PCM. He purchased a remand unit from Ford, and noticed a LARGE decrease in power.
Eventually went to the junk yard and found the same original calibration code, BLAMO power was back.

The new OBD-II stuff is better however, the way it was explained to me is EEC-IV basically has like 16 fuel.air curves to choose from, the new EEC-V is like 1600

So basically my only choice is probably going to be a 91 PCM. i will have to compare the serial numbers on the actual PCM to make sure i get the right configuration for trannys, weight, 4x4...ect

i could have fun with this...

techincally if i put a 4dr PCM on there, i could possibly get even more POWER! haha maybe not

damn so im going to have to go to the junkyard, and probably buy like 3 or 4 pcms to find the one i like the best... heheh

so if the 93 PCM is looking for a second o2 sensor, could i maybe solder inline a resister to make the PCM think its there? haha

91-92 from a ranger or Explorer with same engine and trans should work.

Not serial numbers, calibration code. Example is: COW-1

I'm not familiar with the calibration code? is this printed on the PCM in plain view?

yes on a sticker.
Search google for PCM calibration code.

There are lots of numbers, etc, but the 3-4 digit cal code is what you want.

Some of the chip makers, like Superchips have instructions how to find your code online.

hehe, Do these look like the numbers?
