      Hi,
I have a 97 Explorer XLT. 4 door 4.0 SOHC with 4x4. It has the selector knob (AUTO, 4H, 4L)

The lights on the dash come on briefly when I turn it on so I know the lights work. However the 4x4 system is not working. If I drive the snow the automatic 4x4 does not engage. If I try to switch it into 4 wheel high or low it does not engage. The lights don't even light up on the dash. No noise or anything. I recently had to replace a battery and Ive read too that a dead battery may have caused the ESCM to stop working?

I've heard something about a 4x4 Control Module but from reading on here those are in 2001 and newer models. Do I have a Electronic Shift Control Module? Where is it?

Any suggestions? A complete diagram of the electronic aspects of the 4x4 system would be greatly appreciated too so I can understand how it works.

      Thanks!
