Awesome write up!

when i turn the wheel all the way to the left and turn into a pothole a always hear a clunk. is this do to a bad CV?:salute:

Could be a bad ball joint. Doubt its the CV axle. Jack your vehicle up and grab the 12 and 6 position and try to shake the wheel. It should move with the vehicle. If not, probably ball joints.

If you feel it in the steering wheel its probably tie rod ends.

it moves alittle at 9 and 3??? what can that be?:salute:

Tierod ends. I have a how to on an escort in my youtube link below. Same ideas apply for a explorer.

when replacing the cv, should I be concerned with any fluid or lube?

don't think so

nope...unless you've got an internal problem its pretty straight forward. . you might want to put a little lithium grease in the end just because...

Mountaineergreen you said:("You may need to drive the bolt out with a punch or screwdriver, the punch being recommended".) So this bolt is not screw thru the knuckle?,is just tite press meaning that I have to hit it to get it out? It look so tite that look that is screw rater than press. So do I hit it or screw it out. Please reply, thanks!

That bolt does not thread into the knuckle it just slides though. Thread the nut back on part way and tap on the nut with a hammer to get it most of the way. Then if it still won't pull out use a punch to tap it out the rest of the way. A little pb blaster can help to loosen it up in there.

Thanks for reply,I been trying but is like seal it there,I spray it with pb blaster spray, and still no improove. I will let it set for tonight and try tomorrow. If any other sujestion let please let me know.

If that is about the 4WD axle shaft, in the hub, hit it harder with a hammer. Don't damage the threads, use a punch or socket extension etc. Use a bigger hammer, hit it hard, then harder. Watch the depth of the threads in the hub before you start, don't drive it in more than slightly. Only get it started to move, then it will come out easily with less effort.

How to take out the upper bolt that holds the upper bolt joint, when the head was peel and the other end was broke.Should I drill it out? Please reply! Thanks!

I hit the crown nut attach in the tie rod end on a 1999 Ford Explorer and got stock, the tie rod is loose but the bolt spin with the stock nut, what can I do?

I have a problem. I followed the pictures exactly and the description was awesome with how much it helped. everything seemed to work perfectly. drove around the first day then this morning i went out and there was a small puddle of gear oil on the ground and its leaking on the side where the cv axle shaft assembly goes into the axle... any ideas??? Thanks its much appreciated

mine is still leaking too :( i replaced the axle seal shaft twice already and it still leaks..

hey, does anybody have a pic or can anybody take a picture of a CV axle assembly before it gets installed? i bought mine from NAPA and i just took it our of the box and slapped it (well, carefully slapped it in place :D) in replacement of the old one.. does it have any retainer rong of some sort or anything that helps seal it up?

A leak with a new seal may be common. It is somewhat delicate to install the axle seals in the front diff. I used three new Ford seals and had a leak after a few weeks.

There is a spring inside the seals, it's there to help expand the seal lip onto the axle. That spring can be pushed out while installing the axle. If it is knocked out it ends up in the diff, and the seal leaks. My friend Ford tech told me of those. They have a trick that helps them get the seals in without dislodging the spring. They fill the backside of the seal with grease, they pack the groove where the spring is. That evidently helps to avoid knocking out the spring.

Be gently when installing the seals, don't accidentally hit the rubber flexible part. Regards,

yep, that spring should not be knocked out of place since it helps keep the seal to sit on the cv..

so there's no getting around to keep it from leaking? that's odd.. the only leak i have right now is from that darn axle seal :(

what is the difference from the oem cv and seal (that did not leak even after 10 years of use) from the replacement ones (which leaks soon after installation) anyway?
