I took my X to a custom dyno tuner in my area, actually the best in the New England area and they strapped my bad boy down for a days fun.

http://www.nedyno.com/

The owner, John was awesome- a real car buff just like out of the Car TV shows like Rides, Horsepower TV, Truckin etc... He had to remove the drive shaft going to my front tires as my truck is a 4x4 Sport. The Ford tuning specialist was called in to adjust a/f ratio's and timing curves. By the way this man tuned the fastest car in the world on 10.5" in slicks, an 88 Ford Mustang Pushing 1183 rwhp. He is only available nights and weekends as he works for MIT during the day as a computer programmer.

They beat my X pretty hard taking it up to 6k rpm for a total of 13 pulls. I was kind of worried because my truck is no spring chicken with 137k mi on the clock. They found A/F ratios where way lean due to the Volant so that was adjusted.

In the end the 4x4 put up a best showing of 160rwhp and 220lb ft of torque on 87 octane. Pretty good numbers seeing as the transfer case is steeling a lot of the engine power. I was told 96-98 GT Mustangs put out 160rwhp

Ah Fungue, the truck really pushes the speedo on the highway with ease. But it still seems a bit lean in the deep rpm ranges 4k and above. I am pretty near convinced that not enough fuel is getting to the injectors, as stated before my fuel pressure measured 28psi at the Schrader valve which I think is low. The friggin dealer said anywhere from 20- 60psi is spec and 28psi is within spec. Sure it is within spec and the truck runs but is it optimal? Another dealer told me 30psi with the vacuum hooked up and 40psi without, 28 sure isn't 40.

My next step is to replace the FPR when the weather warms and go from there or just dump the X and go for the Jeep SRT8, 0-60 in under5 sec

Interesting
For as modded as you are, your running about bone stock numbers

WOW! And affordable!
I think this will be my stop one night this spring/summer. AFter I get all the maintenance done....

BTW, they have a group discount! We should see if the New Engalnd Explorers could meet there one day and have a little competition!
Legalitus: This is in no way an attempt to coordiante a "Group Purchase."

Spindle you smokin Crank man or have you been inhaling the fumes from your exhaust. I have a 4x4 with a transfer case that sucks up at least 30rwhp, the front even though disconected was still seeing power. As evidenced by the fact that it tryed to leap off the dyno with the front shaft connected.

Bone stock numbers?? Doubtful, you should do your research. My tuner said 4.0 sohc 4x4 make around 135rwhp stock and the 1996-1998 Mustang V8 made 160rwhp. My X is right in the same range as the GT motor. Your second statement is as sad as the first "as moded as you are" I have a Volant intake worth 10hp at the crank and a free flow muffler maybe 5hp at the crank, nothing more. No C&L or 4.6 TB, headers, wires etc...

220lb ft of tourque at the wheels is pretty damn good in my opinion. What numbers do you pull spindle with your California Emissions :D

Al the a/f ration was 14-15 at part throttle and 12-13 under heavy throttle near perfect on the computer. Took about 5 runs to dial this in. My base line was 148rwhp before a/f tune. I still think it is not getting enough fuel though as stated above. I can't believe how much air the Volant intake sucks in compared to stock. Sounds like a dam wind storm.

Drew, I took care of the dyno info, John is a super great guy. I sat and chatted with him and few other visitors about fast cars and funny dyno stories. They are cheap to at $75 for three pulls.

Lazz, I don't do crank. I have done my reaserch, you will see 20% drivetrain loss max with your currant setup, your tuners RWHP numbers are wrong.
Your TQ numbers are great. mine run 225, and lazz, there is no such thing as Kali emissions, yours is the same as mine, you just make 40 less RWHP, you have a major problem with your engine. Pls post the graphs Lazz

Also my top speed on the Dyno was 128mph at 5500 in o/d. On the way home I was cruising at 90mph turning 3000rpm, so maybe it is possible.

Dyno's give a good base for HP but they cannot duplicate real world conditions. The air blowing into your grill feeding the intake and keeping things cool can add more hp. Most dyno shops don't have fans that can blow 100mph of wind. At my shop they had a small rug drying type fan that blew about 20mph.

I gained 6hp and 12lb ft of tourque letting the engine cool down for 30 minutes before my last pull.

Pls address the above post lazz, where you dynoed in OD?

Spindle, are you saying that you have a 4x4 that makes 190rwhp? I find that pretty hard to believe with an engine that's rated at 210hp at the crank as your is. If you only loose 20 horses through you transfer case, Differentials and tranny I want your secret.

If someone has dyno numbers for a 4x4 Explorer with the 4.0 sohc engine please post them. My engine is rated at 205hp stock. They did make upgrades to the '99 and up engines but the numbers stayed the same.

Come on Spindle these guys are big time pro's.

They have dynoed and tuned 1000's of cars. They did the runs correctly and not in o/d. He did one flat out run from off idle to top out through the gears, to check the shifts firmness.

The Ford tuner (Mike Freedman) is a specialist in Mustangs and blower mods, he was like "why are you dynoing and chiping a V6 Explorer. Our engines make about as much hp as one bank of cylinders on a well tuned V8 mustang.

If I do have fuel problems these guys had no idea and assumed the truck was in proper running order and tuned it as such.

No Lazz
I have a 4x2 that makes almost 200 RWHP, yours should be the same as your T-case do's not come into play,
'where no upgrades made to the engines untill mid 2002, and than the numbers did change from 205 to 210
Can you pls post your Dyno graphs

So basically they were not able to diagnose any problems, correct?

When I dynoed mine with just an intake and cat back exhaust and synthetic fluids as you signature says you have, I laid down 181.85 RWHP.

There is something amiss with yours.

I think I would find another tuner; stock RWHP numbers for the SOHC are in the 160 range.

I'm not trying to get into this argument, but the t-case does come into play as there is NO 2WD mode on the '97 up 4x4 explorer, it is Control Trac 4WD and the onboard computer does engage the the magnetic clutch for the front output sending power to the front wheels.
