Tach problem

Hello...I am a newbie to this site but feel that the query that I have can be resolved here.
I have a 2001 Explorer Sport, 2WD, 4.0 L SOHC, 105,000 miles.
When I'm traveling down the road the tach is registering 4000 rpm or more...and when I hit the top of the dash board above the tach gauge it drops down to a normal reading...for 20 seconds or so, then right back to more than 4000 rpm. Nothing else is happening to indicate any kind of problem with my car.
What's going on?
