Help i have no clue about spacers and tortion bars

i have no clue about lifts or anything but i am learning. I own a 95 eddie bauer and i am looking into getting bigger & wider tires, my friends tell me i could get torsion bars real cheap and that would give me the lift i need. i want something that is going to last, could someone tell me some info on tortion bars and spacers, or atleast point me in the right direction? thanks Lee from Alabama
