Hi to you Explorer FANS... :dpchug:

I am new here and I am proud owner of a '93 Ford explorer XLT. 4WD, nice white, with newly polished chrome wheels, 4.0, 6 zylinder, 160 K miles first engine but second trani.:fart: In the meantime I am retired and have time to learn to fix things by myself ( that's a lot from a desk worker with fine hands LOL.) I have replaces caliper, brake shoes, and rotor and in - outside wheel bearing. First time and NO part left over . WOW.
TIP: USE extension MAGNET from 99 cents store to get looking key out. it flips faster out that any nife will do.

However this is my next plan:

1. All E- Windows go down but not up .. only crack crak crack from Motor. - any help? (No Viagra does not help for windows to go up! :splat:

2. Exchange Tie rods and all mechanic steel connected and chamber etc to wheels bc . alignment is bad - still noise when driving faster. ( alignment will be done by prof.) what parts do I have to order.? Any help. And is Rockauto the best?

3. Here is another one - when my fuel injectors got cleaned I got 19 miles per gallon. BUT after a while it went back to 14 - 16 max. Any idea if I should buy a FORD EXPLORER PERFORMANCE & ECONOMY CHIP 4.0L, 4.0 SAVE GAS--FUEL--SAVER from E bay 19 US.

4. last not least: on the long run I would like to cut the roof off and make it a truck summer car in Phx AZ.

That's a lot - Any ideas what the cost would be?

I would like to come into contact with guys who can give tips for my Explorer and yes I will search in this forum to find information as well. I find the search function can take some improvement but that is just me.

However, Happy Easter always save on the road, gas in the tank, air in the reserve tire! :) . :)

Welcome to the forum!

Thank you. I like MGB - hard to get one in USA.

#1, Cylinders inside the window motor gear assembly have crumbled. Search Forum posts for window motor repair, parts available in most auto parts stores.
#2, If 4 wheel drive may be front shaft u-joints.
#3, Fuel economy varies during the year as fuel blends change for the seasons.
#4, If you want to drive a Jeep, drive a Jeep. The Explorer is perfectly suited to being an Explorer and neither You nor the Explorer are likely to be happy with the results. That said it is your truck to do with as you please.

I agree with every single thing Centaurious said. There are YouTubes on fixing the windows, it's one of those things... the first one will take you an hour to get oriented, then it's quick and obvious for the other windows. Now, I'm looking out the window at my Explorer and trying to figure out how one could cut off the top and make it look like anything but a hacksaw job. I don't see it, but if you are good at body work, perhaps it could be done well with a great deal of effort.

Welcome, by the way!

Thank you Centaurus. You like it to come straight to the point. :)

#1, REALLY - And all broken in the same time ? Believe you but.. .sad.. .
#2, U joints? hmm. have to find out. I thought I want to exchange all brand new ( guess I am wrong) that left and right tie rod and left right center arm and chamber to adjust alignment ( done by prof) has to be exchanged?
# 3, Yes here only blue sky and from hot to hotter. PHOENIX AZ> Does anybody get more than 15 miles in any city with Explorer 1993?
#4 get you - have seen one here long time ago with self made convertible. liked it. But think u r right - get a jeep wrangler instead.

Thank you for your time and be safe.

Hi Roadrunner. Thank you for your welcome.

I will check You Tube and believe I can manage or exchange Motor. I order always parts from rockauto, Even their service sucks when you ask them questions and their database is sometimes not right. Any good alternative?

Saw her a cool one - Thought cutting along the roof 10 inch behind driver seat. Weld ending piece on opening. Have roof ending part with window replaced to cutting line as on end of roof and cut then along backdoors window heights to the end. Take rear with window off and top part goes on top of cut, as said before, to be able to open window. Bottom part may as lid on end. - out with backseats - have bottom covered even have place in foot room for storage with lock and spray the whole bottom with that plastik material you see in other trucks. Final have a pipe gong over where roof was and saw a cover to fit, But that's more than cost of used 2 door jeep. So kiss the idea good buy.

I have the Explorer just for getting building material not for sunday car so I thought it would be ok. 12 month a year you can drive open in phx AZ. Why to have even doors? But I agree even I can do a lot - but cost wise it is a bad idea.

Be safe and thank you for answering.

Last motor I bought was from Amazon, of all places. $30... free 2nd day shipping if you are a prime customer. I have run that motor for a couple of years now, no issues. But, do look at the video first because it's a $2.00 repair, you really don't need a motor. I got the motor because it had a burned out winding.

Yeah, I was going to talk about a roll-bar, but it sounds like you are on a different track now.

Well they are three little plastic bushings. They're designed to crumble/break (if they didn't, the metal parts in the motor would be destroyed if the window came up on someone's arm or finger -- or worse yet, someone's arm or finger would get destroyed. The plastic bushings are designed to "give" (crumble) instead of someone's body part or the motor). It's not too bad of a job, you just have to remove the door panel / watershield. It's more aggravating than anything. You might need some new trim clips (they hold the door trim in place) because those like to snap off when you remove the door panel. I bought some door trim clips from a Mustang site somewhere I think -- Ford used the same trim clips for lots of models back then.

# 3, Yes here only blue sky and from hot to hotter. PHOENIX AZ> Does anybody get more than 15 miles in any city with Explorer 1993?

I don't. 15 mpg is the best I have ever gotten in town. Really more like 13-14 mpg depending on the temperature. Before I fixed my EGR, I got 12 in town.
