Carol Tomé, chief financial officer for Atlanta-based Home Depot, revealed the company’s interest while talking to the Rotary Club of Atlanta on Sept. 21.

Tomé said the company currently has “Do-It-Yourself Automotive” in a pilot program in about 50 stores across the country.

“We really like what we are seeing,” she said. “It’s replacing your windshield wipers and spark plugs. It’s a natural extension of what we do. I like what I see.”

Tomé told the Chronicle that many of the contractors who are Home Depot’s top customers are hands-on people who are able to work on their cars. By selling auto parts, they can do more one-stop shopping. About 4 percent of Home Depot’s customers account for 40 percent of its business, she said.

Tomé said a decision had not been made to implement the program company-wide.

..They have a bay or two devoted to vehicle stuff at a couple stores down here like when they first come out with their commercial cleaning products aisle..

..HD is big on taking name brand products to start then bringing in chinese stuff..

These aisles of products are also replacing the good high quality contractor items with more stuff geared directly at home owners..

They are turning into a wally world slowly..

I think it's a really bad idea. Less space for what people expect at a Home Depot.

I'm all for it, but floor mats? Wouldn't trailer hitches and roof racks make more sense

As long as they don't start selling real auto parts like a true car parts store. Cause then it'll just be a wreck.

Don't you guys have enough Car Parts stores down in the States..?

Yes, and usually in the same strip mall as Home Depot:D

Hmm, maybe they should start selling groceries too. That way you won't have to stop at the grocery store to pick up burgers for the grill you just bought :D

..Out here they already sell drinks, candy bars, chips, beef jerky, and energy drinks inside the store..

..But you can usually get a gourmet dog or burger from the vendor out front..:D

Yep the only place you can get a Vienna hot dog or a bratwurst around here.

Sounds like they are trying to be Menards. They sell auto parts, light groceries, dog food, and oh ya, hunting gear, lots of hunting gear.

walmart?

Sears & Target have similar products. Target has a section for tools, hardware, and auto stuff like this. Sears has a separate place across the street for batteries, chargers, tires, and oil. The store used to have hardware but they are slowing getting rid of it. A few years ago Home Depot & Lowe's added appliances to their hardware line. Some people thought that it was odd, but if you think about it, it added to their value since contractors making a kitchen will have to buy appliances from another source.

walmart

walmart can now order auto parts. rotors, alternators ect. takes three days to get them. prices are about same as a auto parts store. figured this was relevant to the topic lol.

Very relevant..:)

It seems there is a trend developing...

..Could this be the beginning of the end of the local auto parts stores as we know them?

IMO they died long ago. NAPA is as close as there is to the parts stores I remember.

..X2

..Our old local NAPA still had belts and hoses hanging on the wall that you pulled down with a hook...They recently closed it and gave us a new large regional facility and they offer 5-10 of everything but i/2 is imported stuff..:banghead:

..Although they have lots of stuff they have a large online order following..

Sometimes you need a part in a hurry such as a starter or an alternator, and can't leave your vehicle dead on the highway for 3 days.

Then you need to got to Autozone or O'reillys. Just be sure to have them bench test the starter, alternator before you leave... There is about a 50/50 chance that the "new" part won't work ;)
