I need to remove a portion of the dash, most likely left of the steering wheel, so I can mount another switch for more lights. How would I go about removing portions of the dash plates so I can do this?

It is kind of hard to try and explain. What you should do is get a Haynes Manual for X's, that has helped me figure out how to take everything apart. It really comes in handy.

dash removal

The plastic dash face can be removed by GENTLY prying all around the edges with a flat, rigid tool. I use a small pry bar that has a flat end on it. Pry all the way around until loose, then pull away from dash with fingers. I've found its easier to get the panel free by pulling the shifter downward to get it out of the way. Just be careful not to crack the panel. Some electrical connections need to be disconnected before the panel can be completely removed. Good luck. After you've done it once, its alot easier next time.
