Hmm, it looks nothing like my '98 armrest. What year was that?

Anyway I think your fix was a little too limiting. You don't have to use a napkin. A chili dog w/extra cheese would work equally well... but then most of you don't know the awesomeness of Cincinnati Chili Dogs.

Our old '01 XLT had that style of armrest (well pieces of it). I think a piece of sell-adhesive female Velcro would be a bit more elegant and longer lasting solution. Also works great on loose HVAC center vents that keep dropping down.
