Lifts and max tire and wheel sizes for explorers
This is a quick reference guide I have put together based on information gathered from the Explorer Forum. Remember this is just a guide. You may have to do some fender trimming to fit these tires on your explorer. Others things can change what size tire you can run on your explorer. Like fiberglass fenders, rim width and rim backspacing.. I figured this would help some of you that were pondering what size lift to run what size tires.If anyone would like to add something go ahead and post it and I will add it to my list. If any of the moderators could make this a sticky that would be great. Hope this helps.

29 inche "tires" ;)

HAHAHA, man I just busted out laughing cus of this (and then quickly edited to prevent from looking totally stupid:D). I remember when I wanted to get my local tire shop to install my tires on my stock 16s, he thought I meant 33 inch wheels and was like "Um, I don't think we can put those on our machine, let me go check" He comes back out with his manager with a "wtf is wrong with you look on his face" and it was all I could do to not bust a gut. Man, I'm dumb :rolleyes: But hey, long story short, he still ended up misquoting me, getting me mount/balance/alignment of my 33s for $100! It was a winner of a day, hah.

Way off topic, sort of, but does anyone know what the best thing to use is for getting off the shipping tape residue from my tires? I have goof-off, but I'm scared to use anything for fear of it eating the tire. Thanks guys. :salute:

Thank you so much! tons of good knowledge there and thank you for taking the time to put all that down for me!!

Max size

Ok, I reading many different opinions on this subject. The chart is great, but still dont think I'm getting what I need. I have a 2003 XLT on stock suspension. I just purchased DC-1's 15x8's. Trying to find out the max tire size that can be used without any lift. From what I'm gathering it seems to be 31X10.5. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks.

...:scratch:..Did you originally have 16" wheels stock, and will 15" wheels fit over your calipers???

I have 15 x 8 on my jeep. I'll have to try swapping just to see if they'll fit. In any case do you think the 31 x 10.5 will be ok whether the dc-1's are 16 x8 or 15 x 8?

265/70/16 - Minimum rim diameter. 16minx8max w/o a lift, I believe 8 is the max. I have 17x9 w/ extended coilsprings. But 15"s are a no go...

Hi, first post, and just bought a 96 explorer 5.0 v8 AWD eddie bauer edition.
Everything on it is stock, and I was hoping to do the following:
Pro Comp PXA8069-5165
15x10, 5 on 4.5 Bolt Pattern

* Backspace = 3.625 in.
* Max Load = 2200lbs
* Finish = Gloss Black
* Hub Centric = No
* Offset = -46mm
http://www.performance4trucks.com/W...s=210&t_pt=100073&t_pl=5451&t_pn=PXA8069-5165

With
Super Swamper TSL Bias
SSTSAM-12

* 31/10.50-15LT, TSL Bias
* Load Range C
* Max Load 2250
* Tread Depth 24/32
* Overall Diameter = 31.3
* Black SideWall
http://www.4wheelparts.com/Tires/Su...&t_s=158&t_pt=100820&t_pl=3873&t_pn=SSTSAM-12

I should have no rubbing or anything out of the ordinary right? Thanks in advance!!

Tires

Would this chart be accurate for the 16" wheels aswell? I don't have any lift yet, so would 31's-33's fit on a stock 1998 Expo 2dr? Stock tire size is.....P255/70R16 i think or it might be 75 not sure. i'm looking for very little to NO trimming

The chart is accurate, yes. Think about this, the tire is a 33" regardless of a 15" wheel or a 32.9" wheel. It only changes depending on the shoulder height. For instance, I have a 02 Sport and I'm running 33" BFGs on 16x8 stocks, it's the same size as a 33" BFG on a 15x8, just a different size cutout hole for the wheel. Your stock tire size should be 235/70r16, that's what I was running originally, at least, so I could be wrong. And the only way you will fit a 31" is with a TT/Shackles, at least if you want no rubbing. As for a 33", I was told I would need a plasma cutter to put those on without a BL, and it was the damn truth. I have 3" BL/TT/Shackles and the only reason I don't have any rubbing is because I bought my tires used, so they're about 32.5" in diameter. Hope this helps.

[NOOB ALERT]

I just bought a 2004 Explorer XLT. I am wondering what the biggest size tires I can fit on my factory wheels is.

Right now the wheels are wrapped with Goodyear Wrangler SR-A 245/65/17

Thanks for the help!

Not trying to sound like a jerk, but the first page of this thread says this:
2002-2005 Ford Explorers Click here for lift options
No lift - 32x10.50 or equivelent in Metric Measurements on Stock Wheels (265/75/R16 or 265/70/R17) - no modification needed!

...So there ya go. I may be misunderstanding what you're asking, but that's what it sounds like what you want.

I seen that but I wasn't sure due to my wheel size not being there.

Mine are 245/65/17. I honestly have no clue as to what that means and what I can get away with either.

No worries about not trying to sound like a jerk either. That's why I posted inside of NOOB ALERT tags. lol.

If I was to go off that original post it appears that I could put up to 32 inch tires that are no wider than 10.5 inches on it? Would that be correct?

Yeah, no worries man, heres what your numbers mean. 245 means that it is 245mm wide from left to right, the 65 means the shoulder height is 65% of 245mm aka 159.25mm, and the 17 means you have a 17in wheel, which is only useful in terms of what size diameter tire fits the wheel. Therefore, with all the in mind, the first page is exactly what youre looking for, from what I'm understanding from the posted chart. More than happy to help with any more questions you have, also try the 02-05 Explorer forum http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=93 and check out the modified section, there will be plenty of help there, for sure.

Sweet. Thanks a lot. I appreciate the info.

Ok, So I am trying to do my research before I go spending 1k on new tires.

I have a 3" procomp suspension lift with 265/70/17 wheels/tires currently.

The front fender had to be slightly trimmed in order to not rub, and it hasn't ever Rubbed on me.

However I do not like how the wheels do not come out as far as the factory fender flairs do so I am trying to get the wheels wider so I sont have to use wheel spacers.

I want: 285/70/17

I am not fully understanding of all the tire lingo but this thread states:

1-2 inch suspension lift - 32x11.50x15 on 15x8 rim/ may require some extensive fender trimming

And I am confused.

I have 17" wheels not 15 so I am not sure on how to use this.

I tried using a tire size calculator to help me with fitment issues, but It is still way over my head.

What do I need to do in order to get 285/70/17 to fit my 2000 ford explorer eddie bauer 2wd?

It has a 3" procomp lift right now, and the front fenders are slightly trimmed in the front.

I myself have an 02 Sport, with 33's under a 5" lift, and I can tell you this. The wheel size does not matter whatsoever... a 15" wheel will fit a 33" tire just as well as a 17" wheel will, as long as the tire is designed to fit that specific wheel size. My tires are technically 295/75r16s, so from what I'm understanding from the chart, you should be able to fit 33's no problem, especially since you have a 3" suspension lift. Some of the 4DR guys may know better, but with a 285/70, I personally don't see an issue at all for you, seeing as you already have a lift installed.

Looking at the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor Pro Grade - a new size just released for Q2 2009 - LT265/70R16 Load Range E. Goodyear lists a 10.7" section width when mounted on a 8" rim width and 30.6" diameter in its specs.

The quoted chart shows that a 265/75R16 with a 10.5 Sect Width should fit with no mod needed, but since the OEM tires are Michelin Cross Terrain 235/70R16 (9.5 Sect width as measured on 7" rim width) it seems that a LT265/70R16 tire (spec lists 10.7 sect width as measured on a 8" rim width) mounted on the stock 16 x 7" wide rims will come very close, if not rub, the front spindle upright... The clearance between the inner tire and front spindle upright is only about 0.7 inches now with the stock rim and OEM 9.5" section width tire.

Does anyone have something close to an LT265/70R16 10.7" section width tire mounted on a stock 2002-2005 Explorer with stock 16 x 7" rims (no wheel spacers) that can verify how much clearance the inner tire has with the front spindle upright?

Also, take a look at this link of an 04 Exp with questions about mounted BFG AT 285/75s... http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2206353&posted=1#post2206353
