I'm not a fan of Flowmasters. I hear too many of them on the streets. They're too quiet. I'm going to ge the Dynomax kit :)

I have a Green Machine carpet cleaner that does pretty good for a small cleaner. I also have a regular sized steam cleaner for carpets as well that has an attachment. I will try them before I decide on getting rid of the carpet up front. The carpet in the back is all torn up, and so I'm just going to replace that with the vinyl.

I agree but I couldn't complain about the price lol

Someone either here or on rangerstation.com found a quote for me on the dynomax for I think it was under 150 shipped ;) I just don't have the cash right now.

Dang lol

My suggestion for going with a newer model was based off the fact that you could probably find one for $2000-4000 in incredible shape if you look around.

I definitely agree that the first gens are easier to work on, and some of the parts for them are dirt cheap now, so from a budget standpoint in terms of DIY maintenance they are hard to beat.

However, since the economy is such that people are selling off their SUVs for just a few grand because that's all they can get, it's a heck of a time if you're wanting to buy.

The benefits of the 4.0 SOHC vs. the OHV are more power and torque, a broader RPM range in terms of torque/power, and bigger gains in terms of mods. Mostly this is due to the OHC design vs. the pushrod OHV design, but there were other changes throughout the years. The SOHC does have it's own issues though, with timing chain noise and chains in the rear of the engine, as well as just being more complex than the OHV.

My suggestion for the SOHC is also based off your wanting of more power, which is easily done by going to a SOHC, which starts off stock with more than the OHV with mods. Add headers, exhaust, ECU tuning, etc. to that and you are going places.

A first gen is a lot of fun, and I wouldn't trade mine for anything. BUT if you don't have a place to work on it or do the stuff it needs, you might consider the cost of keeping it vs. spending a grand or two on a newer model that will hopefully need little if any maintenance, not to mention the savings in time.

Not that we wouldn't love to have you in the first gen forums from here on, but it would be simpler and better to sell off a running vehicle and get another that suits your needs, rather than dig yourself into a project that keeps going and getting more expensive, then having to get rid of it and drop the money on something else to drive later on anyway.

Yeah, this does sound like a way better idea. Although, finding a newer X in decent shape with minimal maintenance is going to be hard to find lol. Ppl really abuse these SUV's. I DID see a '95 for $3k awhile back on CL that just barely had like 120K on it, looked in great shape. Shoulda taken it! Only thing now is, I gotta sell mine. I have not had ONE call. Guess I am gonna have to take it up the rear if I wanna sell this and buy a '95 or so. I really wished I had gotten that '95 I saw.

How will I know if the V6 I choose from 95 on is a SOHC or were they all SOHC's?

SOHC wasn't introduced until 97

Really? Dang. Means I may not be able to find a sohc for reasonable..

honestly..... in this area, I can find dozens of decent 2nd gens for under $2000. I don't know about your area, but most places, they go fore pretty cheap.

I can prolly pick up a 98 for about 3-4k. The less I have to finance the better. This area is still one of the areas that have higher vehicle prices at least I think so. It might be awhile b4 I can pick one up.....no interest in my 1stt gen.

Keep a look out on the forums. There are plenty of 3rd-4th gen Explorers sold for just a few grand due to certain reasons. Local is usually ok if you can find a good one-owner deal, but something with a lot of owners will be as you mentioned, beat on and just another project.

Drive your ride around with For Sale signs on the side windows. You're in a better spot when you can sell your ride for what it's worth rather than have to get rid of it ASAP.

If nothing else, you can give someone on the forums a deal who wants a stock first gen for a trail rig project. You can keep it bumped in the for sale forums, and offer to sell the spare engine seperate, too.

The thing you need to consider though, is a 98 is getting old enough it is probably gonna have nearly as many or as many problems as your 91. Your 91 has probably even had some maintenance done to it that a 98 would be due for soon even, so all in all, you probably won't actually be upgrading at all, aside from getting into something with a little more power. As far as maintenance costs go, you will likely be ahead sticking with your 91.

I've owned newer vehicles and I've owned older vehicles. I find the key is to find a vehicle that is easy on maintenance, cheap on maintenance, and fits my needs, then keep that vehicle for as long as possible. Pretty much why I used to be so big into ford escorts. Really, first gen explorers can't be beat for maintenance costs, and a 2nd gen explorer is, like I said, probably going to require just as much maintenance or repairs as your first gen.

Cost matters aside though, 2nd gens are nicer vehicles in many ways. But remember, no sense changing vehicles just so you have a newer model year if you are looking to avoid maintenance issues and you pick up something else that is still old enough to have just as many maintenance issues.

In my opinion, the best thing to do always, is to stick with one vehicle for as long as possible so you really get to know that vehicle and are really familiar with everything that goes on with it. It will make diagnosing problems easier, and it will be easier to predict when you are going to have a problem or a part will come up for maintenance. So, if you do decide to upgrade, make sure you only buy a vehicle that you are gonna be happy with for a long time.

Yeah ur right. 98's r not much newer. I do know what's wrong and not wrong with mine....I just don't have time or money to really keep it running for a lot longer. Sooner rather than later something major is going to happen. As far as I know everything is original. Nor do we have room for a major project. My mach 1 is a garage queen. She stays in there no matter what. Especially during winter, I don't drive her. I got the x to keep me from having to make my mach 1 a daily driver. I just don't know. My husband and I r so financially stretched, just basic maintenance is rough.....the economy has hit us hard. I want a second job to pay off some bills....but there's nothing out there. I'm a licensed practical nurse and can't find 40 hrs a week. That's sad.
Anyways, thanks for giving me some stuff to think over.

After reading some of this thread I would just drive it,honestly can you afford to start building engines and lift kits, tires, etc? Doesn't sound like it,I'm not picking on you.I have $4000 in surgery bills to pay so my projects have come to a screeching halt,I know how it is.

Drive it until it breaks down for good, you won't get jack for it if you try to sell it and you have to get real.Sorry....it's a fun read but there it is.It's just not realistic to think you will be able to do the thousands of $ worth of work you talk about.:D

Now that I started thinking about what everyone's said, and is still saying, I'm probably just going to drive it til something major happens, then most likely part it out. Will keep up on maintenance like I have been, but not really put anymore into it than I already have unless necessary. I really hope it lasts thru at least this winter, then maybe next year I can start thinking about something else if it does stop running. I need to have a daily driver because my mach 1 is my baby. I don't want to have to make her a daily driver.

There's no reason you can't just drive it as is, first gens are very reliable, as long as you take care of any maintenance issues ASAP and don't let them slowly get worse and ruin the vehicle.

My suggestion for "newer" wasn't a 2nd gen or even a 98. There are 2001-2006 Explorers out there for cheap with low mileage. Keep a lookout for a screamin' deal while you continue to drive your current rig, and make the leap when you find what you want.
Sell off the first gen afterwards for a few hundred and you've upgraded for a nice price.

You can also just upgrade the current muffler for cheap:

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182514

Advance Auto parts has Thrush Turbo mufflers (essentially the same as Dynomax Super Turbo but without flow directors or the Lifetime warranty) for $20-22. Be sure to get the 2.25 size that matches the stock pipe, clamp it on, and be sure to re-use the stock rear hanger behind the muffler. You could probably even do this with the replacement Walker muffler from Rockauto, too.

Yeah, I've taken care of any issue that's come up, and its still going strong. I've replaced alot of parts on it lol. That's why I have been reluctant to really just do away with it. I like it, its been a good rig. I have to have an SUV. I have two dogs that I take everywhere. If, by some miracle, I happen to come upon a nice newer X, I might take it if I can afford it. Not really wanting payments...that's why I was thinking the 2nd Gens.

I bought it with the intention that I was going to keep it......

Argh. Sooo darn frustrating.
