Rear pinion shaft help

I was trying to take the pinion shaft bar out of my differential how ever when I got the bolt off it slid down and hit the differential case how do I pull this bar back out? I can turn the bar any way but for some reason I can't just pull it back in. I own a 2001 ford explorer.

The way this is written, it sounds like you are trying to remove the pinion shaft from the axle with the gears still in?

That is correct and I was able to remove it in the end by putting an allen wrench in the side of it to pull it out.
