Below are torque specifications (in alphabetical order) related to the Ford SOHC V6 4.0L engine used in Explorers, Mountaineers, Mustangs and Rangers. The source for the specification is in parentheses. If there was a difference between Haynes and E/MWM I used the E/MWM value. Tightening sequence diagrams are at the end.

There appears to be a difference between the valve cover torque in the listing and the sequence listed in the diagram - by over 2x - which is correct ?

Are there rubber gaskets on the bolts ?

Has anyone that has done the valve cover gaskets replacing with ford OEM uses gasket sealer ?

@floridacatfan The Job 1 SOHC engines had aluminum valve covers and the Job 2 engines have plastic valve covers. I know the Job 2 valve cover bolts have rubber grommets/seals on the bolts. IDK about the Job 1 bolts. In any event I would never worry about torquing the valve cover bolts unless you feel like you might over-tighten and break them, or warp a sheet metal cover. With the type of gasket/seal used on the Job 2 valve covers the cover bolts only need to be snug. I just tighten them with a 1/4 ratchet and when the bolt stops turning I don't go much tighter than that. Still it never hurts to follow the recommended correct torque specs for everything, but never follow a spec you find that doesn't make sense (or confuse inch pounds with foot pounds). It's basically the size of the bolt being tightened and not so much the application that determines the torque requirement. Tightening sequence is necessary and important on some things, but not really important on others. When in doubt jump around on anything with multiple fasteners.
