Stupid is as stupid does..................

So i'm doing my front brakes on Saturday. All is going well. It is, after all, disc brakes. Not like the old days when all four corners were drums. This should be easy, right? Wrong!!

All went well. Or so I thought.

I did the front brakes without a hitch. Ex was off the jack stands and ready for the road test. I decided to clean up before the road test.

While I was cleaning up I found one of the new pads by the driver side wheel. My first thought was that the idiots at the factory put an extra pad in the box, right? There is no way that I reassembled the driver side without installing one of the pads. I mean come on, no way.

Well, I'm an idiot. Not only did I forget to install one of the pads, I didn't tighten the caliper bolts!!

Good thing I decided to clean up before the road test and not after.

I got the "extra" pad installed and all was well!

Just goes to show you that you should always check your work.

Hey, nowhere on my resume does it mention intelligence.

I had a 93' Oldsmobile Cutless Supreme back in high school. I got it for free from the next door neighbor. Her daughter ran it without changing the oil and it became a street anchor for the next year. With the help of my dad I push it into drive way and start tearing into it. We replaced the oil pump, redid some of the piston inserts, and had to get the crank shaft re-machined. The goofy thing was off on one of the lubes. Anyways, we get through all of that and I start to drive it again. The first day I drove it to school and then to band practice. Well as I was pulling into the parking lot I noticed it responded weirdly. My one last job was to connect the transmission lines to the transmission cooler. I forgot to and dumped all of my transmission fluid in the parking lot. Go me =-)

I almost did the same thing last time i did my brakes! Felt like a total dumb@$$!!!

This stuff is great! I subscribed to this thread.

Ok, so i bought my 1991 Navajo used, and the transmission (manual) wouldnt stay in first unless you held it there and the overdrive did nothing. Got a nice used transmission at the local junk yard; tore out the old trans, come to find out the people before me had put gear oil in the trans instead of ATF like your supposed too with these rigs. First gear synchro was shot, and overdrive gear teeth were non-existent; O-D shaft was ground smooth. (any ideas what happened there?)

then, here's my stupidity (or was it my grandpa's) at work: we have the junk yard trans on the table, looking at the slave cylinder thinking, "should we replace that or not?" so my grandpa says NO and i let it slide. Slave cylinder went out next week. i was off from vocational school for summer and didnt have a lift this time, so had to pull the trans in driveway.

why did they insist on putting those 2 bolts on the top, WHY?

Cant fix STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been trying to figure for 3 days now why my 94 ranger would not start. Been raining so I've just been driving something else. Hooked up charger to it last night went out around noon today and still nothing. I start checking under the hood(in the rain)......nothing, check fuses in cab...... all good????????:frustrate Radio, dome light, dash lights, all good. Shifter position pointer in "R"........put in "P"......Guess what it started right up...:banghead:....DOH!!!!!!!! I guess Im glad it was parked in a hole.

Way to start the new year

Stupid is as stupid does......................Outstanding!!! :p:

Have you ever started an engine while under the hood?
.
I have many times . . . but once the car (Ford Escort) was in first gear. Apparently there was no safety mechanism to prevent it.
.
Chased that car for quite a while. :D

I'd pay to see that! ;)

My brother in law started his ranger from under his hood once. The family thinks it ran him over before it ran down the hill and into the ditch... He came in the house as white as a ghost and said, "I just did something really bad."

I had known this girl since she was six years old and when she was able to buy her first car I would help her out with maintenance.

So one day she said she was going away to college the next morning and asked me if I would put front brakes in it for her. It was an 80's Honda Accord and was incredibly easy to work on. I said yes even though I had what felt like an incredible stomach ache. I installed the pads, changed (flushed) the brake fluid and took it out for a test drive. Brakes were terrible! It would hardly stop!
When I got back and pulled the calipers again the reason was really obvious. I had installed the pads metal side toward the rotors. Fixed the dumbness and said "have a great time at college". The in the middle of the night went to the hospital due to the gut ache. The next morning my burst gallbladder was removed.
I figure that was a good excuse for making such a lame mistake.

Welcome to the club oldmodman. Although it's probably not something to brag about, you are in! :p:

I've had the week from hell (new job fell thru, CEL came on, heater core in the dash burst and then I crashed into my gf's Explorer with mine)

So, today, I decided to change the stat and the heater core... I timed myself... 2hrs 50 mins to remove and replace everything and an hour for the thermostat....

Before I went out for supper, my gf called and asked me to meet her for supper.. so I went out... and then, when I came back, I did the thermostat and then put everything back together and as I was about to close the hood I found a bolt... I didn't recognize where it was from so I put it on the bench, shut the hood, started the truck up and backed out of the shop...

I soon realised where that bolt came from as I tried to steer... I'd forgotten to re-couple the steering extension.... good job I was only 3ft out of the shop when I found out...

Ok I've got one. I know I have had several moments like yours, but this is the one that I laugh about the most. I was working on my 78 Mustang II, and putting those nice cross drilled rotors on the front of it.

So, I tell myself, I've worked on this thing a million times, i know this car like the back of my hand, and since I'm not going to the bar, i might as well buy a six pack to enjoy while working on the car. I did so. Four beer later, I feel like its a good time to have some Jager and Monster. I was taking my time, more focused on drinking then actually working on the car. I put together the passenger side without a hitch. I go over to the drivers side, take it apart, put the new rotor on, and put everything back together. I go to grab my "baby moons" wheel to put on the drivers side. I went and put my lug nuts in close reach. I picked up and started putting the wheel on the lug studs when i saw it; a little "R" etched on the hub of the rotor.

I put the wheel on and torqued the lug nuts, figuring i would just switch the sides the next day. And to this day, it still sits with the rotors on the wrong side. lol. :)
