torque converter?

      hello, new to this forum but not new to forums,

      i have a 2003 explorer limited 4.6L, the truck was making a weird whining sound when ever i would touch the gas pedal and it would get worse going up oir down hills. we took it to a local shop and they said it was somthing in the transmission, today they took the trans out and told me that there was unusual ware in the torque converter but they would have to call a trans specialist to comfirm what the problem was. the truck also has had problems in the past with reving stalling at red lights.

      question's are,

      could this be the tourque converter causing this problem?

      and if so how much is a new torque converter ?

      anyone else have this problem with there explorer?

      well i have an 03 v8 limited and i have the dreaded torque converter rattle , it sounds like loose balls in the transmission until lockup , acually its the Clutches in the torque converter being bad ( bearings , springs etc ) a commom prob with the V8s , i priced one at ford at the tune of 500.00 , i may go with a rebuilt one. as of now im still driving it its getting louder and sounds bad when im sitting at a light and people look at me HA

      I got a flow master so i didnt have to hear it any more ha ha what rattle sound....

      did you install yourself? How long did it take and any tips ? or special tools you used.

      It took a couple of days to get the tranny out, could be done in one though. You definetly need to have a full set of metric wrenches and sockets, and you will need about 3' worth of extensions to remove the bellhouse bolts.

      There's really no special tooling needed, but you're gonna need patience cuz dropping the trans is certainly no picnic.

      First thing is to drain the fluid, then remove the drive shaft... next you gotta remove the exhaust back to the cat converter. Then pull your starter-not the leads-just unbolt it to access the flywheel, and remove the 4 nuts that connect the wheel to the torq conv..

      Then support the trans. and remove the crossmember that supports it.

      At this point, you can start lowering the trans. (disconnect front drive shaft if 4X4 and remove X-fer case). lower just enough to disconnect all the harnesses, the shift lever and the cooling lines. Then with your long extension(s), remove the bell house bolts and drop her out..

      You can pull the torque converter right out of the bellhouse by hand..stick in the new one and go back together with it..

      Mind you this is just a brief description... I would also recommend getting a box of sandwich bags and "bag & tag" EVERY nut and bolt that you remove..

      i have pulled a tranny from a 92 expo to rebuild it , yes needed 3 ft of extentions , but job wasnt hard , was a pain to put back in since i was alone doing it with 1 foot on the jack handle and my hands trying to put it back in ..
