transfercase slip?

do transfercases slip? i was crawling on a rocky trail in 4 low and at times when i gave 'er some gas it felt like when a tranny slips. i hope its not the tranny but it doesnt do this in 2wd/auto or 4 hi so i dont know, could the fluids be low? the tranny fluid is perfect. its a 98 sport sohc. thank. mike.;

yes transfer cases slip, when i had my BW 4405, ive been stuck on ruts a few times with the X on 4lo and both front tires not turning.

You know when the chain inside the t-case is slipping. Under light throttle it will be fine but if you give to moderate throttle the truck may or may not move and you'll hear a horrible ratcheting noise. When you hear that, you'll know. I've had 2 t-cases go that way.
