can this stop my transmission flare 2 to 3, iv no flare going 4 to 3, this on 96 gearbox 4.0l, the nearest to the drum housing is overdrive and the one near the range senor? could that sort the flare, also i have a slow reverse engagement.

You could try it, but shift flare issues are usually related to hydraulic pressure loss. A dryed out servo might stick, and cause a slow band engagement/release issue.

thanks

well i had my dad adjusting the bands, at first he tightend them both and loosend by 2 turns, the effect was a good reverse engagement, but it was too tight for it to change to 3rd, felt like having a park brake on, so loosend them both again by 1 turn and 3rd has less flare but the flare is noticble, going at full rpm reaching 90 3rd was smooth, what one should we focus on to solve the 3rd flare? one near bellhousing or the one by the range selector (gearslector) ???

The first one closer to the bell housing is for 3rd & 4th. The next one is for 2nd. The rear band which is not adjustable is for 1st & reverse. The next step would be to go into the valve body if the band adjustment doesn't completely help. The vition D ring kit would be recommended for the low/reverse servo in the rear to help with the delayed engagement issue.

thankyou boss

I hope some of you are still checking this thread, I've done a lot of searching and this one seems to be the most informative.

Ok, so here is my problem. I have a 98 ranger with a 3.0 and I believe the tranny to be a 4r44e with about 130k on it.

A couple of weeks ago I hauled two dirt bikes, a quad and a very small trailer totaling probably 1500 ish pounds, and amount I think the truck should be able to handle just fine. On the way back it began to slip in overdrive so I took it out and ran it home just fine in 3rd. When I got back I discovered that OD and Reverse would hardly work, but as long as the OD off button was pushed 1-3 worked fine.

I drained the fluid and found (what I believe to be the shift and coast solenoid) to be loose. I took it out and replaced the o-rings (I had done this previously and it worked). It didn't fix it this time.

I did some band adjustments next and here is where it is getting interesting to me.

So I had the forward three gears, missing OD and reverse. If I adjust the front (toward the engine) band in then OD and reverse work great but if I push the OD OFF button the engine feels like the parking break is on. I tried adjusting it out in small amounts to see if there was a happy medium but it seems to be all or nothing.

any idea's or suggestions? Thanks for any help

Hey guys, i have been checking out this site for a while now and can alway find the answers to my questions.....you have probally saved me a ton of money. Thanks!

Now that i found this thread, i have a question. I have a 1996 xlt 4.0 with 156,000 and i recently replaced my transmission with a rebuilt one from a local junkyard that also rebuilds trannys. Im not sure which trans it is, other than its the right one for my truck. Anyhow, from the day i put it in, it takes 2-3 seconds to engage in d or r. Also today i was driving home and i noticed that there was a slight slip when going into overdrive. Is this something adjusting the bands could cure? Perhaps they were not adjusted properly by this shop? Also, which trans do i have and what would the turns out be? 2? I figured i would ask and hopefully aviod tearing it out AGAIN and trying to fight with them over their 3 month warrenty which was up last week. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome to this forum! You have the 4R55E transmission. The band adjustment is outlined in the first post of this thread. Your problem could be related to a band adjustment or it could have other problems such as dry, leaking servo pistons or the famous shift flare issue. Check the other sticky threads for more information.

Cool thanks for the quick response! I will try the band tighting tomorrow, but exactly is a shift flare? I have seen it a few times in this thread, still not sure...... i hope the band adjusment works, i really dont want to pull the trans again, but it must be that as far as the slipping is concerned, it only slipps a little going into od. Im a great mechanic when i know whats wrong!!

also, as far as the few second engaement time, is this an issue that i can leave alone and it will be ok, or is it something that could damage the trans in the future. Is there any links on specifics of replacing these parts? Pictures go a long way.....never dove inside an auto trans before, but there is a first time for everything..

We currently don't have a rebuild thread on the 4R55E, but we have threads on the 5R55E valve body, the A4LD rebuild diary, and Project Frankentranny which are all sticky threads along with this one.

Where does someone look to find the transmission type? Does it need to be on lift? I have 1994 Ranger Splash 3.0 - 4 Wheel Drive, 3 speed auto/OD - slipping after changing Torque Converter. Had no problems until then.
Thank you... If I can save truck by adjusting bands - That would be great!

Ok, so I finally got a chance to work on it and pulled out the valve body, on my way thinking that the servo was possibly dried up and not engaging. I found this tear in the top gasket on the plate above the valve body. My truck (98 ranger 2wd, 3.0l I think 4r44e) had lost OD and reverse after towing some a trailer with some dirt bikes and a quad. If I adjust the front band in all the way I get them back but with OD not engaged 1-3 feel like the parking break is on. Could this tear in the gasket cause the servo not to engage and explain my problem? Thanks for any advice guys!

I have just bought a Transgo shift kit.
They say that the Intermediate band should be backed off just so much that I can turn the output shaft with my hand... Is that wrong?
That's just about 3/4 of a turn.

Are these the same specs for a 5R55W? I have a 2003 Explorer and am getting the P0775 code. I changed the solenoid block but the problem is persisting. I'm thinking a band adjustment may help. Thoughts?
