So, I'm seeing that the 4.6's are getting around 16/25 MPG, How about you 4.0 guys? I have always driven V8 Trucks and would like to keep it that way if the MPG on these Explorers are hardly noticeable between the V6 & V8.

go with the V8. that is my only regret with my Ex.
Mileage difference is minimal. i get 17 in my V6 no matter how i shake it.

This '06 is for sale locally for $12,800 with 36,000 miles. 4.6 4x4!!

I would jump on it if my truck was sold!

Thats a nice truck.

I can squeeze 22 Highway/17 City out of my parents '07 4.6. Its quite surprising how well it does. For the power difference and lack of a difference of economy, a person would be nuts not to buy a V8.

Go with the V8 you will be glad you did.

I have the v6 but if they had that same ex at the dealer i went to for that price i would have bought that instead. I say forget the little loss of mileage and go for the huge increase in horse power.

gotta go v8.... Ever since the V8 was introduced to the Explorer line it's gotten almost the same fuel economy and provided a nice boost in power; besides, what an american made SUV if it doesn't have 8 cylinders??

I've been getting between 18 and 19 with mixed driving with my v6. I didn't notice a huge difference in power between the 6 and 8 when I was test driving. I opted for the 6 to save a little money on the purchase price and on insurance.

Wow!! 30 MPG? In mixed driving we are averaging 19.2 according to the trip computer, and around 18.5 using a calculator. Although the V6 can fly up and down the Colorado mountains with ease, wish I had a V8.

Not possible to get 25mpg with the '06+ V8 Explorer, unless perhaps you drive 50mph on a FLAT highway for a whole tankful.

And I THINK the 10% ethanol crap now in gas has lowered my mileage. :thumbdwn: I'm now getting only 17 in mixed driving (RWD '06 Explorer V8 Limited). :( I had been getting 18-20 until recently.

The 10% ethanol has certainly effected my mileage. When I get gas w/ no ethanol I can expect 2mpg better. Keep alcohol where it belongs, in my glass, not in my gas.

I wish I had the economy all of you get. My '06 4.0 gets 13 mpg in mostly around town driving. I have gotten 20 on highway, but don't do that very often. Of course the 13 is wife's driving and 20 is mine.

This is a lie

I average about 14.5 in mixed driving in my 4.0. It is rated at 14/19. Also the V8 has a 6-speed tranny and 3.55's where the V6 has a 5-speed and 3.73's.
With the Gibson exhaust I've seen as high as 23 on a flat highway trip (in Florida) with the cruise set on 65. The exhaust doesn't seem to help with the city mpg.

Exact same thing here. I can get up to 22 on the highway with the V6, but wifey never does any better than about 14 in the city. Leadfoot lady:cool:

The V6 comes with 3.55 rear unless you get the heavy duty tow package which includes 3.73 rears

I recently took the 660 mile round trip from my house up to mammoth lakes in northern california. I averaged 27.5mpg going up and about 29mpg coming home. This is running on 87 octane, and i was doing 65mph with the cruise control on the whole way :) My average city mileage is around 18mpg. Its all in how you drive, throttle less, brake less, drive smooth and even :D
