In Canada, as Sgt1411 posted, the tint laws vary from province to provine. Here is what I've found regarding Ontario tint laws.

Ontario - For the driver’s compartment, right and left, no film can be installed that would substantially obscure visibility from the exterior. Behind the driver’s compartment, any film can be installed.

      Also, from a police officer on a forum discussing the Ontario Highway Traffic Act;

      Colour coating obscuring interior
73(3) No person shall drive on a highway a motor vehicle on which the surface of the windshield or of any window to the direct left or right of the driver’s seat has been coated with any coloured spray or other coloured or reflective material that substantially obscures the interior of the motor vehicle when viewed from outside the motor vehicle

The guideline that is typically used is can the driver be clearly seen, can the seatbelt be clearly seen.

      Window Tinting Questions on Matching

Got the front windows done today with 3M 35% and absolutely hate it. The shop did a great job on the install but the color does not match the rest of the car. It is a bluish black and the factory is a brownish black. I had Suntek 35% on my last car and it was a lot darker than the 3M 35%.

Question is what tint brands and percentages did you guys use and does it match the factory tint? Thanks

Since its 3M I'm going to assume its the same issue where it looks different from inside of the car? Or is the 20% better looking than the 35

Rear tint is 17% to be exact.

      Just for reference.

I have Sun-Gard tint on my Sport and have used the same brand on all my previous cars. Matched the stock coloured windows perfectly.
I've got 30% in the back, making it almost limo black, and 50% in the front. But will soon replace the front for the 30% as well as 50% looks almost nonexistent with the moon roof visor open.

FYI, the front side windows must allow 70% light passage in Quebec.

It wasn't a question but just a note. Your last statement in the initial post seems to suggest that 50% is too light (seemingly non existent). Am I reading that correctly? I would think 50% would be darker than 30% with the moonroof open. Perhaps I'm missing something.

I had mine done 'limo' on the rear, one shade lighter than that on the rear sides and one shade lighter than that on the fronts. I like it except I can see ot at night. I've used this same tint 'formula' on at least three other cars using the same shop and had no problems with visibility. So either the factory tint is much darker on the E Sport or the smallish greenhouse obscures too much light. Not gonna change it, just live with my choice:eek:

I just had my '14 Explorer Limited front side windows done at 35% and the windshield done at 55%, was kind of worried about the front and being harassed by the police, but there is really no way for them to test the front with a meter. As long as the sides are 35% all is good.

I hope that you are referring to the top 6" or so of the windshield and not the entire windshield. Keep in mind that while tinting reduces the amount of visibility inward, it also reduces visibility outward, especially at night. There is a reason that it is illegal to tint below the line defined by the markings on the windshield.

FYI. The windshield can be tested with a meter. They make meters that have 2 separate pieces so they can put them on either side of the glass and measure light throughput.

Yes there is a meter that does test the windshield and all glass on a vehicle. Don't be fooled, even most small towns can figure whether it's legal or not.

      Window Tint and Vent Visors

Hey MParrado - Looks nice. I worked with the police in South Florida and most of the them have 5% on their own cars! They did not mess with dark tints unless you happen to be driving in a not-so-nice part of town or did something stupid that made the officer look for something to give you a ticket for. I have heard some of the State troopers actually use a razor blade and take the tint off right there on the road.

Anyway, what brand are the vent visors you have? I am going to get some soon and wanted to know what kind to get. And did you put splash guards on the front too? Did you use WeatherTech? Thanks!

BACK IN THE DAY I HAD A 98 SPORT BLACK WITH 5% ON THE FRONT AND 2 LAYERS OF 5% ON THE BACK PRIVACY GLASS. I GOT PULLED OVER 1 TIME AND THE TOWN THAT HAD "THAT COP" WITH THE BLADE NEVER FOUND ME. HA! IF YOU GET PULLED OVER, IT'S A NON-MOVING VIOLATION AND YOUR PAY THE FINE. DID THAT LAST YEAR FOR SOMETHING ELSE, NO CHANCE TO FIX THE ISSUE EITHER, JUST A CASH TICKET. VISOR I BOUGHT FROM CARID.com EBAY STORE. I SAVED A FEW BUCKS ON EBAY THAN THE WEBSITE: AVS - Smoke In-Channel Ventvisor Window Deflectors Front, Rear 4 Pcs. I WENT AVS BECASUE I WANTED IN-CHANNELS IN DARK COLOR. SPLASHES WHERE DEALER INSTALLED.

So I've decided I need to add tinting to my Limited. I originally thought I would just have the front windows done to match the back and maybe add an windshield eyebrow. I'm not really into the car accessories so I do not know much about tinting etc (but have had it done in the past).
Anyways, the person on the phone said the factory back window tinting doesn't offer any heat protection or much UV protection. She mentioned I could add tint over the factory (thus doing the whole vehicle) to get maximum heat and UV protection.

Is this true?? Would it be ideal to add additional tint/film over the back windows (for an additional cost)?

Also, Does anyone know what % tint the 2016 back windows are? I would like the front windows to roughly match, but I do worry about night vision.

Also, she mentioned tinting/filming the windshield as well. Does anyone have experience with that? How does it affect night vision?

      Thanks for the help!

Tinting your windows is dependent on your states laws. Which state you are in is not listed in your profile so we can't help you there. The rear windows on my Ex do an excellent job in blocking UV. I just got the front side windows tinted. They are just trying to get you to spend more money by trying to get you to needlessly tint the rear windows. Be careful tinting the windshield. Technically it is against federal law and most states outlaw it unless it does not fall below the little tick marks etched on the upper sides of the windshield.
