99 sport xlt
hi guys- i have a 99 explorer sport. just replaced the timing guides and tensioners, what a job!- drove fine for a week, engine just died, wont start. turns over fine, all gears and cams still moving. fuel pressure good, spark at coil, wont start with starting fluid, either.
tested the crank sensor ref. signal:good.
tested the cam sensor ref. signal:non-existent.
do i have a bad ecm? where else to look?---zeus

Am going through same question with mine.

Without cam sensor ref. signal (non-existent) it will not start.

Is cam sensor good, wire shorted?

If you have a bad crank position sensor the vehicle will NOT start, but will run with a cam position sensor bad, disconnected or circuit incomplete. The crank sensor is imperative! How did you check the sensor on the crank? It is to be checked on the AC scale (no that isn't a typo).-j

After $517 to the local stealership, I went out and bought a new starter from Autozone.

Heres the spark, wait for the flame.

All I needed was the paper, I could have refitted the starter myself

TB-FordPMGR (Rev )1)

ATTENTION Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, and Mazda owners
.

The OEM starter came with a male spade type connector.
FMC recognized this as a problem (i.e., too many good starter being returned).

A conversion kit was produced to change the original spade connector to an eyelet/post type connector.

Cut 4-5 inches of the existing ignition wire (this is where the corrosion exists).
Strip 3/8 inch of inuslation off the ignition wire.

There is a butt connector to crimp to this shortened wire. Heat the butt connector (heat shrink) to create a water proof connection.

Money well spent if it saves anyone a dime.
