    Fuel Pressure regulator

Thanks for the insight J! Well seeing as it was aluminum (the pump casing) and it was around 100 degrees, I would have to have sat there for the better part of a couple of hours and that would have been nasty seeing it was the middle of the day....mad dogs and Englishmen...! So I took a short...

    Fuel Pressure regulator

I thought so. I am looking forward to getting the pressure back to spec next weekend and i will report back.

    Fuel Pressure regulator

Chugging X I thought an update on my chugger would be in order. I have finally localised the reason the X dies....fuel starvation. However it is not the usual cause. Someone in their infinite wisdom modified the X and put an inline fuel pump for a BMW. However the inline pump only pushed...

    Fuel Pressure regulator

Sadly, it was the wrong filter and the right one landed up costing $70! When I got under the X, I found that there was a mod done to the X and an inline BMW filter made by Pierburg was installed just in front of the filter. I changed teh filter anyway, but kept the old one as it still seems new...

    Fuel Pressure regulator

AH! The service manual I am working off is 1996 to 2000 Explorer and mountaineer. The eninges it covers are 4.0L OHV, SOHC and 5.0L. So I am looking at the fuel line on a later system there. Nevertheless, no conversions here, definitely a return line system. My pressures work out to 27.5 PSI...

    Fuel Pressure regulator

On further study it seems that Ford call the part i was fiddling with the fuel pulse dampener. It sits on the fuel rail just right of the oil filler cap. The fuel pressure regulator appears to be in the tank on the fuel pump assembly. The 5.0L has a fuel regulator in the engine bay according to...

    Fuel Pressure regulator

So! I switched on the ignition and the pump chirped and pressure came up to 1.8bar. I started the car and the pressure stayed at 1.8 bar at idle. I disconnected the vacuum pipe and the pressure shot up to 2.4 bar. I revved it, WOT'd it briefly, ran at up to 3500RPM constant for a couple of...

    Fuel Pressure regulator

I fitted just fitted the fuel pressure guage. I came with a long coiled length of thin copper wire and two brass fittings on the ends. I had to make a small mod to fit it to the test valve next to the FPR. I checked for leaks from the fittings and there are none. I read 0 bar when I switched...

    Fuel Pressure regulator

My '96 X is still chugging and dying after driving in the heat, at slow speeds, it seems once the fatal starvation sets in, even if I am on the open road at reasonable speeds (60mph) with speed cruise on, it still eventually dies. After sitting for about 10min, it seems to find itself again...

True Duals on my 04: How do I get the o2 sensors to work with dual exhaust?

Sorry to hi-jack this thread. A question to JDraper.... my X ('96 4.0L OHV) is modded with a freeflow exhaust and no cats, and although it pulls off well in first gear (auto-box) and when it hits second it seems to run out of power until about 3000rpm. I doubt that the mod has included a tune...

True Duals on my 04: How do I get the o2 sensors to work with dual exhaust?

I recently purchased a '96 Sport 4.0L here in SA and with no cats (not law to have it in South Africa yet.) and a 2.7" (I measured it with a very-near!) pipe and it sounds like a V8. Pity it does not pull like a V8. Lol

    96 X 4.0 Idles too high

Thanks for the input. I am not sure I understand the elongation though. Are you suggesting that the butterfly may not be seating and sealing in the throttle body opening properly? I had better pull it off and check. I will also check the IAC gasket as well.

    96 X 4.0 Idles too high

I will "re-stop the plate as you suggest. I will need to order a new IAC. IN retropect, the idle seemed higher after I had cleaned the IAC than before. (1000-1200 changed to 1200-1500). I checked for oil and there was no oil in the intake anywhere. My filter is a cloth one so no oil. I will...

    96 X 4.0 Idles too high

THanks for the reply. I would not know if the IAC is faulty until I replace it and the fault does not go away. So I wil start by searching for a vacuum leak. Does the IAC fulfil any other function except regulate the idle? Thanks again Afterthought. I noticed in one of your other threads that...

    96 X 4.0 Idles too high

I have searched and found some great info on setting idle. 2000streetrod has a great post detailing all the steps to follow. So here's problem. Idles too high (1000-1200RPM) 1. I enlarged the holes of the TPS and set it to 0.96V at closed. (It was 0.74V) 2. I cleaned the MAF sensor with...

New, just bought a 1996 explorer limited

Does the DPFE perform any function besides emission related? Can it be removed or bypassed without affecting the running of the motor?

    Power steering pump recommendation

Sorry to hi jack the post. what was wrong with the pulley? My 96 X whines when I make the slighest move on the steering wheel It has a light whine which becomes a strained whine when I move the steering. I would like to fix it if i can.

96 X 4.0L still Choking out under load

I have been considering all the angles here. The info I may have left out was that being in South Africa, CATs are not a law yet, although all new cars have them. So one or two owners back a "performance" exhaust was fitted. It seems to be about a 2 3/4" pipe (165mm OD) and two cylindrical...

96 X 4.0L still Choking out under load

THanks Eric. I am in South Africa, so hand scanners are not that easy to come by. I will need to get one though. Would you know if I can download a PC program and make up a serial cable to check this? Is there a manual way of checking this? maybe removing the sensor and running without it...

96 X 4.0L still Choking out under load

HELP!!!! The choking became terminal today. It is really quite hot here, around 32 deg C, and my X was driving nicely for about 30min in stop start traffic (not gridlock) and suddenly started choking. Previously it just choked if I gave generous throttle, but this time it eventually would not...

96 X 4.0L still Choking out under load

My 96 X 4.0L OHV chokes out when hot and under load with medium to WOT gentle throttle pulls fine. It sounds like there is no fuel at all. then it suddenly revs and then chokes again. As soon as the gas is released or minimised it runs sweetly. In neutral it also runs fine and revs perfectly...
