To the moon and back in my 2000 XLT SOHC

Wow man, that Ex is looking great for that many miles. What do you use on the black plastic areas to keep them looking so good? I've tried a couple products that work for a little while, but they quickly come back to their faded grey stage. Any help would be great!

Suspension Squeak- Best way to find it?

Alright, I ordered two Moog LBJs from Amazon which should be here shortly. A local shop quoted me ~$150 for just labor since I provided my own parts ($61 shipped). Is that reasonable? I'd be more inclined to do it myself, but I'm at school with only a few tools, and I can't risk messing...

Suspension Squeak- Best way to find it?

Within the last week or so, my Explorer has started emitting a loud, obnoxious squeaking noise from what seems to only be the front driver's side. This noise will occur when going over any size bump, and also while turning the wheel while moving slowly in a parking lot. Everything I've...

    Check your rear brake lines!

What kinds of things should someone look for when they check the lines? I'd always heard about stainless-steel brake lines- are they worth any looking in to?

    The first stuck 2011 Ex?

I was reading this article on Jalopnik- http://jalopnik.com/#!5750855/how-chicagos-using-the-web-to-reunite-519-snowpocalypse+stuck-cars-with-their-owners When I noticed something familiar...check out the picture in the middle of the article. What's that? A silver 2011 Explorer. So much for...

    i lost reverse this morning

No, engine braking being lost does not mean the trans is completely shot. I've got that same issue- it's the valve body gasket that goes bad that causes a lost of engine braking in 1st (only when it's warmed up), a loss of reverse, and a flare between 2nd and 3rd. Read this...

Bad Thermostat = Poor Gas Mileage?

I just got mine done last night. I wasn't able to flush the radiator, so I just drained the coolant, replaced the thermostat, and refilled it with new coolant. Within a few miles of driving, the gauge shot up to normal and I was happy! It fluctuates within the normal range, but everything...

Bad Thermostat = Poor Gas Mileage?

No I haven't been able to figure out exactly what the problem is. I bought a new thermostat from NAPA and I'm waiting for this blizzard to stop so that I can try to put it on! For someone that has a Haynes manual and has never done it before, can anyone give a rough time/difficulty estimate...

Bad Thermostat = Poor Gas Mileage?

I suppose the heat could be a little faster to warm up, but it does eventually get quite warm. If I replace the thermostat and it's not the culprit, what other parts of the cooling system would be left to blame? Is this a job that can be done with basic tools in the middle of a snowy parking lot?

Bad Thermostat = Poor Gas Mileage?

2000 Explorer, OHV I bought my Ex back in June and always noticed that it seemed to take a very long time for the temperature gauge to reach the "normal" area- roughly 20 miles into a drive it would come up. Recently, since the weather has gotten much colder, I notice that the gauge does not...

How to improve brake pedal feel?

I'm not sure of the exact brand, but I replaced the front pads with the middle/high-end offering from my local Advance Auto. No idea about the brake flush, I just bought last June. An older lady drove it for 10 years before I did, and I doubt she ever had to have it done if the mechanic didn't...

How to improve brake pedal feel?

I've had my Explorer since June and the brakes have always felt relatively spongy. Past cars I've driven have "caught" immediately when you press the pedal, and had a great deal of resistance all the way down. With the Explorer, you can press the pedal a decent amount before you start to...

Installing driving lights around the airbag sensor?

I just bought some auxiliary driving lights that I want to mount to the top of the front bumper. To do this, I'll have 2 L-shaped brackets, one end attaching to the inside bolt between the frame and bumper, sticking out between the bumper and grille, and the the light mounting on top of that...

Random squeaking belt, no apparent cause?

That would make a lot of sense and save me money and a headache. How do you suggest testing it? When I went to work this morning it was louder than ever, but while at work I unplugged the IAC, started the car (stalled immediately, of course), plugged it back in and no noise since. Is there a...

Random squeaking belt, no apparent cause?

As soon as I fix one problem, the next one starts.. I replaced the IAC Valve on my Explorer a few days ago, and from then on until now (about 3 days) I've had a very erratic squeaking belt. There doesn't seem to be ANY correlation between the squeak and the conditions the car is under. It...

Car will start briefly, then immediately stall

Would the IAC going bad throw a CEL or not? Mine isn't showing any at all

Car will start briefly, then immediately stall

Well, here's a new one.. I just bought a 2000 XLT 4.0 OHV a month and a half ago, and it has 108k miles on it now. I've fixed a couple things on it that needed fixing after 10 years, but there are no major mechanical issues with the car. Up until 3 days ago, the car always started perfectly...

No engine braking in 1st, directions for repair?

2000 Explorer XLT, V6 OHV, 108k miles, 5speed auto I took a trip up to the mountains this weekend, and managed to find out (at a VERY inopportune moment/location) that my X suffers from the issue of having no engine braking when put in 1st gear manually. I've found multiple threads talking...

How to check if parking brake has seized?

I'm pretty much positive that it does absolutely nothing. I tried backing up a few times with the parking brake on and it made it the entire way without acting like it should, or seeming like it adjusted itself. The whole field of car repair is new to me, and I'm just now getting into it. Can...

How to check if parking brake has seized?

Okay, so I fixed the door clicking. There's a plastic ring that rubs against a plate in the bottom hinge. If you hold the door up and spin that ring around to another spot, it will stop clicking. No idea why, but it worked perfectly. With the parking brake, the pedal feels perfectly normal...

How to check if parking brake has seized?

I just bought a 2000 Explorer XLT a couple days ago and love it so far. 4.0l OHV 5 speed auto with 106k, and it seems to run perfectly for the most part. I noticed today, though, that the parking brake does absolutely nothing for me. An old lady drove it from 1,500 miles to 106,000 miles...
