1998 Explorer Rack and Pinion Won't Come Out

Just to end this thread as it should end. I cross threaded the pressure hose on the rack and had to get a new rack. Thanks for the ideas everyone. I had a shop put the new rack in as I didn't wanna deal with all that crap again.

How close have you been to running out of gas?

I have a bad habit of running my truck at E and knowing it has about 20 miles left in the tank. I once ran out of gas just as I entered the gas station. 20 feet from the pump of course.

The Day I Installed A New Steering Rack

Hello, so as the title states I had to install a new rack. Mine was leaking, so I added stop leak to make it last a couple more months. As always, it worked for a month or so, and came back with a vengeance. I went from 1 bottle of fluid a month before the stop leak, to 1 a week. Eventually I...

98 coolant leak -- SOHC -- Under engine

ohh god, you sound like me when I did my steering rack install. I destroyed the aluminum thread on the pressure hose and had to buy a whole new rack. you can try some sort of magnet, something you could stick down it, not just drop down by string.

    Scott B's 93 Ranger XLT V8

I love this truck. I had always planned on getting a ranger and a v8 explorer to do a swap with, but I really love this truck. Hopefully I can get up the money in time to buy it before someone else does.

1998 Explorer Rack and Pinion Won't Come Out

The frame support where the tie rods go through would not allow me to lift it enough to turn the rack to push it through the passenger side. I finally got it in and everything hooked up except for 1 line. The picture below with the open connection which I believe is the pressure line? I decided...

1998 Explorer Rack and Pinion Won't Come Out

Good idea. I never though about turning the wheel to give me better access to the inner tie rod. The new rack came with bushings and inner tie rods. I just need to get the seized nut off the end of the passenger inner tie rod so I can tighten it to the outer tie rod. Such a PITA lol. I was...

1998 Explorer Rack and Pinion Won't Come Out

It's a V6, the motor only needs to be raised on a 5.0. I borrowed a sawzall and cut the passenger bushing out. I had no trouble getting it out once I could turn it. My issue now is removing, calling this wrong probably, but the pressure sensor? Inside the rack. It's got a retaining clip that...

1998 Explorer Rack and Pinion Won't Come Out

I've tried to get the bushings to budge but they won't. That's why I was thinking of cutting the bottom part out as I can almost force it to turn, just need a little bit more room. I was thinking of just trimming the bottom of the bushing. Let me upload pics I have to Photobucket and show. The...

1998 Explorer Rack and Pinion Won't Come Out

I already replaced both inner and outer tie rods. Every old Explorer I get leaks after doing so. I decided I'd do this myself and I so wish I had something to cut the bushing with.

1998 Explorer Rack and Pinion Won't Come Out

Hello, I am trying to replace my rack and pinion on my 1998 V6 4x4 4 door Explorer. The rack is completely unbolted and disconnected from the steering shaft. I had to loosen a brake line that ran behind the rack, not sure if it was replaced years ago and ran in the way. I removed only the outer...

Hood bent when i pressed down to close it!!!

This is why I own a POS 98... Lol. My brother in-law punches my hood, dented it. I punched his face and everything is fine now.... Besides my dent.

    Tighten your caliper bracket bolts!

Yeah, I just recently installed pretty much everything in the front. Hubs, rotors/pads, inner/out tie rods, lower ball joints, UCA's, and shocks. It's been about a month, I am going to be checking as I randomly hear a clunk recently. I believe it to be the lower shock bolts as they always seem...

PowerStop Big Brake Kit Won't fit?

The truck does brake better. I had to put on the rears and see while waiting for new hubs to come in for the front. My rotors were stuck because the hub bolts were bent not allowing it to come off, so I replaced both hubs. The hubs went in without an issue. They also fixed my ABS issue where it...

PowerStop Big Brake Kit Won't fit?

Thank you. I looked as I hadn't opened the second box. I'm an idiot. What threw me off is that the brakes came in 2 boxes. 1 with rear rotors and front pads(which I tried to put on the front), and front rotors rear pads in the other box. Thanks to living in the rust belt, the drivers side has...

PowerStop Big Brake Kit Won't fit?

I purchased a big brake kit upgrade a couple months back and didn't install yet as I was waiting for snow season to pass by. Well today was a great day to go at it. Besides the fact that the pads on this thing are harder to put on then my old Ranger(do I let the calipers pull them to the rotor...

    MAS Industries?

Ya I just got a job after a long run of living off VA money only, so I need some fixes for a little bit. My ball joints have been clunking for like 5k miles lol. I too do not believe in buying cheap, if I have to though I usually try to buy the best of the cheapest if that makes sense. Now to...

    MAS Industries?

Yeah, whenever I order parts even to fix an issue such as clunking ball joint like I have now, its a fist fight with the wife. Lol. I already have napa lower ball joints so i figured I'd change out uppers at the same time. Later i will replace inner and out tie rods on both sides, then I can be...

    MAS Industries?

Those are the part numbers, just different beginning letters "RK" on one like site, and "CB" on other which pointed me to MAS Industries. The RK80068 has a grease fitting, the CB8708 is sealed. So i thought there may have been a mix up. Hmm... I didn't know about premium "problem solver" or...
