    Windows quit working?

Thanks. I found a blown fuse in #27 . The chart here says 15a but the blown one was a 30a. Strangely info given here does not give windows on #27 . So I replaced the fuse and now I have windows again.

    Windows quit working?

Yeah the vehicle size shrinks and the stuff they put into em expands. Is the '97 model a second generation? I found a blown fuse in position #30 but the illustrations I'm looking at say that is taillights and towing and should be a 15a. Mine has a 30a.

    Windows quit working?

Thanks. Don't have an owner's manual. I'm surprised I didn't see it when I opened the door...

    Windows quit working?

I have checked the fuses under the hood- the main ones left front near the master cylinder. But I can't find any other fuse panel. I suspected it to be in the outside wall of the driver's footwell but nope. I've done a search with no help. So- is there a second fuse panel and where is it? And-...

    Windows quit working?

I'm glad to say that didn't happen to me! I drove 75 miles with lights on and AC going and no problems. Needless to say I was watching for anything to happen the whole way. Just the AWD and 4WD indicators flashing every so often. And dead windows...

Fuses? Why not it makes no sense anyways lol.

    Windows quit working?

I have a '97 Explorer with about 200,000 miles. Its a canadian model and the speedo is in kilometers so... The other day I closed the windows and had the AC going. This on the interstate coming up out of Phoenix. Then the AWD and 4WD warning lights in the lower right corner of the dash started...

    Bad idle

Of course you are right. One of my failings is being lazy. I'll dig up a source for the system of vacuum lines and check them out. All the coolant flying around in there may have caused a hot hose to split.

    Bad idle

I have been eyeing the temp guage because blowing and repairing a coolant hose was what began my problems. The needle rises to about the 10 o'clock position and holds steady ever after- the thermostat is working. As for a vacuum leak- it just doesn't "feel" like it. I drove semi trucks for 33...

    Bad idle

Thank you StreetRod! That extensive info, while not directly solving my problem, gives me a good idea of the systems I am dealing with. I'm just a backyard wrench on cars, but have extensive knowledge of motorcycles. Having built and rebuilt a number. So I feel confident in making some...

    Bad idle

I am surprised that no one has a solution for this problem. I thought this group to be a fountain of knowledge about this vehicle. Must I take it to a shop? But then since it doesn't show a check engine light there won't be any error codes either. What, just start replacing things?

    Replacing whole Thermostat Housing

I have been reading threads here dealing with cooling issues and I get the impression the thermostat housing is a weak point and is replaced often. Being plastic ain't a better idea it seems. Mine has been done recently by the PO.

    Bad idle

My nephew owns one of those Quick oil change places and his buddy the mechanic there suggested the CPU was discharged and I needed to drive it so as to re-educate it. So I have. (Disconnected the battery cables and touched them together 10+ seconds beforehand) But it still isn't right. When cold...

    Bad idle

The new IAC valve arrived. ($71.00 on Amazon) No help. It still idles rough and rpms in the basement. I'm disgusted with this problem. I guess I'll have to break down and be molested by a repair shop.

    Bad idle

I might try the spacer. But I'm going to remove the vacuum hose/tubing as a unit and check for leaks. If it is good I think I'll just pop for a new IAC valve.

What is your temp gauge at?

The temp gauge is not clinically accurate. They vary from unit to unit. And of course thermostats are of various temps too. My gauge is like yours- about 1/4 way. I wouldn't be concerned unless you have related problems.

    Bad idle

The PO tore into the dash and messed around with the instrument cluster. I thought he did it to remove the check engine bulb. But no its still there. It is not now illuminated. But the dash illumination is inop which is why I was in there. I still can't figure that out. I've checked every fuse...

    Bad idle

I am totally exasperated with this problem. I put a hose clamp on the hose-IAC connection. No effect. Is it possible the electrical surge when I shorted the alternator wire blew the IAC valve? I'm trying to imagine what may be the problem. It starts fine but idles right at next-to-no rpms. Get...

    Bad idle

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions with my vehicle. The PO was a ham-fisted kinda guy lol. Many plastic pins in the dashboard are broken off. He installed an aftermarket stereo and ran 2 wires to the battery- both to the positive post. This with the antenna missing and the unit has no CD or tape...

    Bad idle

Thanks.....I had to google IAC valve to see what u talkin' about. Yes I had difficulty replacing that hose in the correct position. Still not sure its back where it should be. I bet thats my problem! The photo u show seems to reveal a T shaped hose off the nipple. Mine has only a 5/8 hose...

    Bad idle

I have made the check and there is 12 volts across the battery posts as well as neg post/B terminal on the alternator. So the fusible link must still be good. What controls the idle anyway? I see an electrical connection from the throttle butterfly above the thermostat. Isn't that the throttle...

    Bad idle

Most of my mechanical knowledge comes from motorcycles. But from that experience, at idle the ignition is mostly battery powered. The generating system isn't doing much till it spins up some. The battery is brand spankin' new. And from the richness of the sparks made I'd have to say its in...

    Bad idle

I appreciate your reply. I have an ohmmeter I can use to check for power at the B terminal. But- why would that make it idle badly? If anything there would be less of a load on the alternator so less on the motor and it would idle better. Do I misunderstand?

    Bad idle

I've done a search but nothing turned up specific to my problem. I have a '97 XLT canadian model 4.0 sohc with 336,x.. kms (about 200k miles). I recently blew a coolant hose- the 5/8 one comes vertically out of the thermometer housing and turns to the passenger side enroute to the heater core...

How to: How To: Drivers Exterior Door Handle Replacement

My exterior handle is still good (knock on wood) and the rods appear to be unmolested. But somewhere in its history a PO was a ham-fisted SOB and he broke many of the plastic parts in this vehicle. The center radio console faceplate hangs away from its proper position etc. The window/doorlock...
