    Mine was painted over also, I just cleaned it good and put it on over it. I don't think this is the way to go if you want to switch back and forth, it will eventually end up pulling all of the paint off the bottom of the channel. I think your best bet is to go with the Ford trim pieces...

    They have been on for almost 5,000 miles now with no issues. The molding has the good 3M adhesive and as long as you wipe the channel out with Isopropyl alcohol or something similar you won't have any problems. I love the way it looks without the roof rack so for me it was $25 well spent.
