Maybe the explorer guys can help...

If I end up doing it myself, I will solder/heat shrink tube, then electrical tape around that.

Maybe the explorer guys can help...

Well, I sold my third explorer and upgraded to '97 5.4L expedition. Honestly, the f-series and expedition forums i've found don't hold a candle to this place. There's hardly no tech advice and basically "WHAT DO U THINK OF MY WHEELS AND HEADLIGHTS". explorer forum is superior to all and has...

Anyone know of an expedition forum?

Thanks, great idea. I just did a search... found a couple pretty lively ones... seems like all the f-series forums have expedition sections... why didnt i think of that?

Anyone know of an expedition forum?

I'm modding my explorer for gas mileage... a DD... I want an expedition as a 2nd vehicle "just in case", and to lift + modify... However, I haven't been able to find a decent, active expedition forum. I found www.expeditionforum.com... but it seems pretty slow and unorganized... thanks.

    Fuel pump issue???

Fuel Filter? Injectors? I'd replace the $5 filter and run some seafoam or other injector cleaner through the gas tank....

Please tell me which synthetic fluids to use.

Is it a certain digit in the VIN or what? I'm going outside in a minute then i'll see if it's anything obvious... Thanks for your help aldive.

Please tell me which synthetic fluids to use.

yup, it's merconV... says so right on the dipstick (and i feel like one right now)... Hopefully going to get around to doing the flush of the transmission this week... I'm set on mobil 1 due to it being widely available.. but i may go amsoil because their site is so helpful. $6 a quart x 16...

Just got an explorer, what next?

Good tune up, replace commonly known things to fail that are cheap. -Transmission flush/filter replacement, switch to synthetic -Oil change/filter, use synthetic -Differential fluid change, use synthetic -thermostat, fuel filter, check the air filter if you plan to stay stock. -seafoam...

    Realistic Gas Mileage Gains

Thanks... that's pretty much what I was thinking, although I don't claim to know much. I installed the adapter + a pretty big 3" cone filter today... I'll fill up tomorrow and see how the mileage goes. I should do this mod-by-mod to see approx how much each will yield.

Please tell me which synthetic fluids to use.

97 xlt 4-door. I'm going to drop the transmission pan, replace the filter, and I'd like to go synthetic... Which brand/kind should I get? IIRC, it takes 3 quarts to fill up right? I also will be replacing the rear end fluid with synthetic... same thing here, what brand/kind should I get...

    Performance 4.0L Intake Manifold

If your engine looks like the one in the picture at the top... the SOHC, not the push-rod OHV... those kits won't work fyi... the SOHC motor is what this thread is about...

    Realistic Gas Mileage Gains

I have an adapter and brand new cone filter... the only differnce would be using my plastic/rubber hose vs getting a metal one in the kits... i doubt there will be too much of a difference just in the hose... what do you think?

    Realistic Gas Mileage Gains

Thanks for the replies... So, I have an MAF adapter + an ebay filter laying here... I really doubt there'd be much hp difference between this using the stock plastic hose vs spending $150 on an intake. What do you guys think?

    Realistic Gas Mileage Gains

Hmm... the tune seems to be where it's at... you don't really have many gas mileage mods. I would LOVE to have my explorer lifted, the only thing preventing that IS gas mileage... if nothing else, I'd like to do the 2" TT + shackles and go 31x10.5 who tunes these? how much is it? thanks.

    Performance 4.0L Intake Manifold

Of course there's interest if the price is right for the amount of power... but without the power figure or a price... i can't tell you if i'm interested or not. If it's about $100 for 10+ hp, i'll buy one for sure... other than that, i need specs. =]

    Performance 4.0L Intake Manifold

Depends on price and power gain really... Without that, no one can say either way.

97 4.0 SOHC explorer idle problem?

I'm no mechanic... but possibly the o2 sensors? I'd check spark plugs/wires too... you can replace all those for under $100.

    What remote start?

I've heard good things about Viper being top of the line... I had an avital in my old explorer, worked great.. loved it. but I think best buy is selling viper ones + the alarm starting at like $150... which includes installation.

    Realistic Gas Mileage Gains

I have a stock '97 4-door SOHC XLT, 3.55 gears iirc. I just averaged 20.9 MPG on a tank of gas of city/highway combined. I even pulled a mountain about 5 miles of this. My driving habits have improved my mpg from 17 to this point. If I were to do some type of air intake, maybe a muffler...
