    rebuilt a4ld no overdrive

And yes, another thing. Having driven the truck for a while after the rebuild, with no OD, I decided to check the band adjustments. I backed out the adjuster bolts and tightened them to the specified torque. Only I forgot to take back the OD band adjustment bolt the required two turns. I got...

    rebuilt a4ld no overdrive

Yes, I put in a new band last week, along with other parts, and the servo I changed last fall after buying this truck. As I mentioned in an earlier post I did a partial rebuild of the tranny last week; bands, clutches, O-rings, etc. The bands in the tranny didn't look so bad and the drums...

    rebuilt a4ld no overdrive

I haven't checked either one particulary (wouldn't know what to look for), but aren't those sensors connected to the computer which in turn energizes the 3-4 shift solenoid if all parameters are apropriate. As the computer does energize the solenoid, it seems these sensors must be working ok.

    rebuilt a4ld no overdrive

..and still nothing... So I took out the VB, went through all the valves. Some were a bit reluctant to come out, had to use pressurized air. The 3-4 shift solenoid didn't to me appear to be working properly, so I put in the original one. I had put in a solenoid kit in the fall with a 3-4 shift...

    rebuilt a4ld no overdrive

The monologue continues... Here then are the results of my pressure test: Idle: P,N 65 psi, R 115 psi, OD,D,2,1, all 80 psi Fast idle (@ 1200-1300) : P,N 65 psi, R 128 psi, OD,D,2,1, all 105 psi. WOT forward speeds about 200 psi. So to me these figures seem to be in line with what they...

    rebuilt a4ld no overdrive

What's this then? Testing the OD solenoid with help of the lamp I didn't pay attention to one little detail: the OD solenoid gets energized also in D ! There's no change in engine speed , no shifting felt in moving the shift lever from OD to D, but the lamp stays on. Whether I ride in OD or...

    Transmission Vacuum Modulator: R/R Advice

I'd definitely go at it from underneath - maybe mainly 'cause I have a grease-pit. Taking off the portion of the exhaust in the way isn't much of a job: three 14 mm nuts at the front, two bolts at the other end. You'll be needing a rachet handle and a long extension bar to get conveniently at...

    rebuilt a4ld no overdrive

Today I connected a lamp across the OD solenoid to see if the computer chooses to activate it. It does. But not exactly in the way I thought it would. I took off from practically cold (outside temp 15 C) and after a few hundred yards drive the lamp went on. No way the coolant temp would have...

    rebuilt a4ld no overdrive

MrShorty, I stand corrected. Yes, there are wiring diagrams in the Chilton manual. It was just something in the back of my head: "No usefull wiring diagrams!" I had trouble finding all the relevant wires when installing a car alarm system; had to use a magnifying glass, and still didn't find the...

    rebuilt a4ld no overdrive

Still no... MrShorty Thanks for your reply. I'll check again BrooklynBay's list. About the solenoid: Yes, I know the "hot" wire is always hot, but the solenoid is not activated untill the computer completes the circuit by connecting the solenoid ground wire to ground. I've checked the "hot"...

    rebuilt a4ld no overdrive

Still no OD/engine braking I have similar trouble with my A4LD. There's been no OD and no engine braking (in second manual) since we bought this '93 Explorer 4x4. First I changed everything that could be changed from the outside, then today I finally finished changing all things internal...

    Trans modulator aka diaphragm assy

Thank you, guys. After writing my earlier post I did some more searching of this forum and elsewhere on the web, went back into the grease pit and checked the stampings on the servo covers: AB for OD, BB for intermediate. I also found Glacier's strong recommendation of getting the ZC servo and...

    Trans modulator aka diaphragm assy

Back from the grease pit. After installing the new transmission modulator still no OD or engine braking in manual second gear. By the way, the FRAM FM-2336 is an adjustable (with a small allen head screw) modulator, even though this is not mentioned anywhere - at least I didn't see any mention...

    Trans modulator aka diaphragm assy

Almost impossible? I couldn't even see the damn modulator before taking off the cat and the heat shield. I guess I'll address that problem when I get the modulator. Have to conjure up some weird special tool or system. Maybe a gear from an old wall clock, the one which the chains rotate... or...

    Trans modulator aka diaphragm assy

Thanks! I think I'll stick with the original (length) pin. As I said in my first posting I have placed an order for an adjustable modulator. When I had the modulator in my hand I didn't check how long is the stroke of the modulator. Using a longer pin might prevent the throttle valve from...

    Trans modulator aka diaphragm assy

Oh well, found the lost actuator pin. I had been looking for a shiny thing, but turns out the pin is black! So no mystery there. I tried to drive the car with the vacuum tube disconnected (and the vacuum distribution block plugged) but there was no upshift from first gear. So apparently the...

    Trans modulator aka diaphragm assy

Oh, I see... or maybe I don't. I don't fully understand the role of the modulator in the scheme of things. I'm a bit confused here; if you make the pin longer, the shift happens earlier, or quicker? I thought the workings of the modulator go about like this: when accelerating or driving with a...

    Rear wheel axial movement

New to this forum, new to Explorers. Is there supposed to be axial play (in-out) in the rear drive shafts? The rear wheels on my wife's '93 Explorer can be moved about 5 mm in the direction of the shaft. Both wheels move the same amount, so it doesn't seem like the result of some random...

    Trans modulator aka diaphragm assy

Stock pin That was quick. And I got the length figured just two mm short. Stock pin? Meaning it's possible to use other lengths also? What are the effects of using a longer (?) pin?

    Trans modulator aka diaphragm assy

Wife's newly bought Explorer '93 has no OD, no engine braking on 2nd or 1st. After changing the solenoids, cleaning the valve assy, running the fault code tests, adjusing the OD and intermediate bands etc. - nothing doing. Still no OD or engine braking. So today another day under the car -...
