Well today I was hauling a Plymouth Breeze on a tow dolly with the 96 XLT and we were on a steep curvy back road and instead of riskin hurtin the tranny I put it in 4low and drove bout 2 mile and damn it started smelling really bad or hot, I had the toggle switch to where it would just be running 2wheel low i don't know what it was and was to busy to be able to check it out today but after taking it out of 4low the smell went away and tonite I had used it when backing the other trailor into spots to haul stuff and no smells from it tonite, anyone have any ideas of what the prob. is?

No which is stupid on my part, if I woulda realized how much weight there was in the first place i woulda used my 92, I think in the owners manual it says the fluid was last changed around 10-15K miles ago. I'm still tryin to decide which cooler to go with there are 5 different ones at advance auto and don't know which one would be better off going with.

heck I figured being in low range it would be a little bit lighter load on the transmission and woulda prevented the fluid to getting to hot but guess i was wrong

As BB says, the test is to smell it. If it has a toast smell, replace it.

Alrighty, I'll check this morning and see what it smells like, and i think the ones that seen at advance looked more like a radiator in different sizes

Here's an example of a stacked plate cooler: http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/...tk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=transmission+cooler

Ok, I checked the tranny fluid with it being cold maybe not cold but checked it after it sat overnight and before it was ran at all and it smelt a little funky, and I believe the tranny fluid is suppose to be a redish pink right?? this was a little like that color just with a little bit of a light brown tint. I don't have tranny fluid to know what it should smell like but i believe it has a burnt smell cause it smells like hot wires kinda.

ok the color is in the "still not bad" section then cause thats about the color of it.
