We had one key for a our work truck and the key almost never left the truck.....until yesterday. It could be anywhere and we are stuck.
2000 Ford Explorer

Yes we should have made a second key but didn't.

If I provide the vin can someone tell me the original dealer? (yes on Carfax). I don't think this is a violation, I don't need the carfax, just the name of the original dealer.

OR

Does anyone know how to get a new key made? Locksmith is $165 and looking for an alternative

PCM must be programmed for key

Even if you got another key the PCM would have to be programmed to recognize it which takes special equipment that is usually only available at a PATS qualified locksmith or the dealer. It takes about 15 minutes for the first key and about the same for the second key. The third key only takes a minute because you use the first two keys. You should always have three keys so when you is lost you can get another one made inexpensively. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. You'll either have to tow the vehicle to the locksmith or dealer or have the locksmith come to the vehicle.

Locksmith is $165 and looking for an alternative

Not a bad price at all for 2 keys (he has to make 2). I had to get some cut for a truck that I lost the keys for and he did 2 keys for $160 and another $20 for a 3rd one.

I have made three keys for my 2001 too. My Ford dealership said that didn't have keying data for vehicles older than 2002, in case that I would lost the last key.

basically you're screwed. you'll have to pay whatever Ford, or a Locksmith, charges to make you at least one key. you might as well make two. if you have two you can make a third yourself. if you have one, you can have it cloned at Ace Hardware or Walmart for about $40.

im in the same situation. the dealer is telling me they have to put a new cylinder in for the ingnition and doors...gonna coat me around 700$ or so... is there a way I can bypass this? like use a screwdriver and just break the mechanism to make it work?

They don't have to re-key the vehicle. What they have to do is reprogram the PATS system to the new keys.

If you have 2 keys you can add more keys to an existing PATS system but without 2 working keys you need a special computer to do that programming between the keys and the PATS system.

That would be a good thing for the FAQ in the back of the owners manual :)

This programming fun is why I have 4 keys and fobs programmed on the mustang and a few spares. Fob batteries don't like getting washed..
