Yes, and in an engine that isn't designed for higher octane the spark fires too late.
That means the fuel isn't completely burned when the exaust port opens, allowing still burning fuel to reach the O2 sensors and cat.

Do that for too long and you will melt them.

When was the last time you saw 1500 degree egt's at the cat from the 4.0?

Fine.
Do that for too long and you will prematurely wear them out.

Is that better?

Oh, and have you never seen a glowing cat?

Mine ran that hot all the time under heavy accel and boost :)

Yes I have, and it was clogged. :D

I checked out your site alec, that is one nice Explorer! I had an M112 on my last Mustang. Good choice with the
Eaton for offroad, can't beat instant torque and rock solid reliability. :)

I posted this in another thread on Premium Gas
There may be another reason NOT to use premium gas (other than price):

Quote from 'Ford Fuel Injection and Electronic Engine Control" by Charles Probst:

"It may even be less than desireable to use fuel with a higher octane rating than called for in the owner's manual. Recent advancements in emission control may depend on so-called "fast-burn" to reduce emissions. If you burn 92 RON when the engine is designed for 87 RON, the higher octane fuel burns slower, and may add deposits to the combustion chamber."

A couple of earlier replies in this thread mentioned the slower burn problem, but I thought that the problem with deposits might be interesting to some of you.

Also there is a TSB for the 4.0L OHV engine which says that using the wrong octane may lead to knocking because of increased carbon deposits. I posted the TSB in this thread Is is really true?

I run 93 Octane from Amaco because like everyone said i have a Diablo Sport Chip. The guys at Panhandle Performance told me its because the advanced timing the chip does. I asked if i could run normal gas and the guy said sure if i want it to knock. So here i am running 93. I don't mind i'm use to it now its in my monthly budget lol.

I put 95 Octane gas in Explorer, Here in Paraguay by Law the fuel under 98 octanes gives 15 % of alcohol, Wit the 87 octanes my engine works bad.
With Shell 95 octanes works better, with 98 better again but is toooo expensive.
By the way I use LPG too it have 110 octanes, is clean and cheaper
